Chapter 50 AN EASY CHOICE AND DEATH
OLIVIA’S POV
This was it.
This was how it would end.
The flames crackled hungrily all around me, licking the air with sharp, smoky tongues. The pain in my limbs had dulled into numbness, and the fire’s heat pressed against my skin like invisible shackles. My lungs burned with every breath, and my body trembled–though from the fire, the fear, or the betrayal, I couldn’t tell anymore.
Evelyn’s plan had worked perfectly.
In the eyes of the world, she was the tormented heroine–battered, bruised, weeping as she reached for her beloved Alpha in a tragic moment of chaos.
And me?
I was the villain.
At least, in her story.
But I wasn’t a villain.
I was the woman left behind.
The Luna no one believed.
The mother who just wanted to live for her child.
I turned my face toward the burning window, barely able to hold my head up, and just then–I saw him.
Dominic.
He stood at the threshold, silhouetted against the orange blaze, eyes darting between the two rooms.
My heart thumped with fragile hope.
He had come.
He had come.
Yes, I knew he’d rushed in for Evelyn. I wasn’t delusional. But he wouldn’t ignore his child… right?
He wouldn’t leave his pup behind.
He couldn’t.
That’s when the voice pierced through the chaos.
“Not one more step, Alpha,” the kidnapper growled, stepping into view with a silver pistol raised. My breath caught. He held Evelyn tightly from behind, the gleam of the weapon aimed toward Dominic’s chest. “One wrong move and I blow this whole place sky–high. Then you won’t be saving anyone.”
Dominic froze.
The fury in his expression twisted into something unreadable. He lifted his hands slightly, trying to placate the man
My vision narrowed on the gun. Silver. I knew enough to understand what that meant for werewolves.
And then–Evelyn. She cried out, struggling in the man’s grasp “Dominic! Please! Help me!”

My head tilted slightly, heart racing as I watched her movements.
They were… exaggerated.
Too perfect.
Too rehearsed.
How had she even managed to hire all these people?
Her sobs were convincing, her body trembling like a leaf. But the man didn’t hurt her. No bruises formed where he grabbed her. She wasn’t even gagged.
Unlike me.
I whimpered again, hoping Dominic would hear it, hoping he would notice me through the smoke–tied up, gagged, half- burned in the corner of a room that was now glowing from the approaching flames.
But his eyes were on her.
Just her.
“I said back off, Alpha!” the kidnapper snapped again, digging the pistol harder against Evelyn’s temple.
Dominic’s hands clenched into fists.
And I watched.
Watched as Evelyn looked up at him with wide, teary eyes, her voice trembling just enough. “Please… save me…”
I saw it then. The flicker of helplessness in Dominic’s eyes. The rage. The hesitation.
The choice.
And in the depth of my soul, I knew–I already knew the answer.
But still, I whispered, barely breathing past the gag.
Please… choose us. Just once.
The world went still.
I saw Dominic tense.
My heart screamed, Look up. Just once, look at me. Please, I’m here.
And then, through the smoke, I saw his golden eyes.
But he didn’t look at me.
He turned to Evelyn.
“Evelyn,” he said.
One word.
One name.
My world collapsed.
Tears blurred my vision. I wasn’t surprised. Not really. I’d known this was coming. But I’d hoped. Foolishly. Desperately. Maybe,
I had thought. Maybe this time he’ll see me. Maybe this time I’ll be enough.

But I wasn’t.
He didn’t even hesitate.
He scooped Evelyn into his arms, carrying her out like she was made of glass. Her arms wrapped around his neck, and she sobbed into his shoulder. It was a scene out of a tragedy–a man saving his love from fire and death.
But that love was never me.
That’s when the smell hit me.
Gasoline.
I looked down–slick liquid glistened across the floorboards. The flames weren’t just accidental. They were intentional. The kidnappers had never meant for anyone to leave alive.
And now… he was gone.
I heard the retreating footsteps. The door closing behind them.
The fire surged, eating through the wooden beams like they were paper. A gust of heat knocked over a chair and it crashed into the curtains, feeding the inferno.
I coughed violently, the gag in my mouth making it worse. My body convulsed with every breath. I tried to wriggle free, but my limbs were numb.
No… I can’t die here. I won’t. My baby…
I curled around my belly, shielding it as best I could. “Please,” I whispered into the gag. “Please, Moon Goddess… not like this. Not my baby. Let me live. Let me protect this life inside me.”
The smoke was too thick now. I could barely see anything. My vision tunneled, fading at the edges.
And then–I heard it.
A voice.
Not from the hallway.
Not from the fire.
It echoed in my head.
Low. Rough. Ancient.
“Mate…”
My entire body stiffened.
The word throbbed through me like a heartbeat. My mind reeled, confused
Who…?
“Mate…”
My eyes widened.
That voice–it was Dominic’s. But not quite. It was deeper, more primal
His wolf.
My fated mate.

No.
No, no, no.
I wanted to scream. To curse the Moon Goddess for her cruel joke. For tying my soul to a man who had never once chosen me. Never once seen my worth.
He was my mate.
But I was never his choice.
And right then, in the darkest corner of my heart, a vow formed.
If I survive this… I will reject him.
I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms, grounding me in my decision.
I would reject him.
Not because I didn’t love him–Gods, I did.
But because I deserved more than being second.
Second to Evelyn
Second to lies.
Second to manipulation.
I closed my eyes, letting the darkness wrap around me like a final embrace. And my last thought, as the fire roared louder, was of my baby.
Please be safe. Please survive. Even if I don’t
And then-
Everything went black.
