Zada’s hands were shaking as she said, “The doctor ran the tests. It’s true, Halsey was poisoned. And the poison came from the chicken soup I made.”
“What?” Sierra gasped, eyes wide in mock shock. Her acting kicked in flawlessly. “You poisoned Halsey’s chicken soup? Why would you do something like that?”
Zada’s voice trembled. “It wasn’t me! I swear, I didn’t know there was poison in the soup!”
“But you were the one who made it!” Sierra shot back, her tone sharp but controlled.
Zada turned toward her. “Yeah, I made it, but you were there, too! You showed up while I was cooking.”
Sierra’s stomach dropped. Was Zada suspecting her?
She quickly calmed herself. Back then, she had been careful not to touch the soup directly–something she had Zada to thank for. Zada had insisted on doing everything herself, and that had now become Sierra’s perfect alibi.
Sierra forced a confused look. “I don’t get what you’re trying to say. Sure, I was there when you were cooking, but I never touched the soup. What exactly are you implying?”
Zada stepped closer, her tone firm. “I didn’t poison that soup. Only you, me, and Halsey ever came in contact with it. So yes, I think you’re the one who poisoned it.”
The words hit like a slap. Zada had just accused her straight up.
Sierra blinked in disbelief. “Zada, I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about. I didn’t poison Halsey. Why would I ever hurt her? You can’t just throw accusations around without proof.”
Zada kept advancing, her eyes hard. “It’s just the two of us now. Can’t you drop the act and tell me the truth? I want to hear the truth from you.”
For the first time, Sierra saw something cold and unfamiliar in Zada’s eyes. It sent a chill through her. Zada had never looked at her like that before.
Sierra knew Zada well–she was innocent, easy to read, and painfully naive. She was the kind of girl who still trusted too easily, a college student with a soft heart. Someone like her shouldn’t be capable of that icy glare.

Sierra curled her fingers into her palms, fighting to stay composed. She forced a small, strained smile.
“I’m sorry, Zada, but I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about. We’re besties, and I’ve always been honest with you. Maybe you’re misunderstanding something.”
