Chapter 6

“Sage, did HQ say anything about a plane landing here at the company today?” Sylvan asked the assistant.

It was obvious he had a sudden sinking feeling in his chest.

“I-I didn’t hear anything like that, sir…” the assistant replied grimly.

She stepped forward, planning to ask what was going on.

Just then, the aircraft’s cabin door opened, and over a dozen people marched out quickly.

One of them asked, “Excuse me, which one of you is Dr. Baxter?”

I stepped forward. The man glanced at me and gave a slight nod.

He raised his voice as he explained, “We were ordered to come and show them what Dr. Baxter is really capable of. Also, just now our boss asked-who was on the phone earlier and said they wanted to lend him a pair of balls? I’ve come to collect that courage!”

I let out a cold laugh and looked directly at Sylvan’s arrogant assistant.

Her face went pale from fear, and she instinctively ducked behind her boss.

“President Armitage, help me!” she begged.

Sylvan took a deep breath and stepped forward. He asked, “Excuse me. It looks like there’s beer some kind of misunderstanding here.”

‘I’m Sylvan Armitage, the CEO of the Armitage Group,” he added authoritatively. “My family runs a company worth billions, and my wife is none other than Mitzi-the eldest daughter of the Lamonts, one of the top four powerful families in the capital.”

‘Oh?”

The man gave a faint nod and pulled out a notebook. Looking composed, he jotted the names

down.

‘Armitage Group… The Lamonts from the capital… Got it. Anyone else supporting you?”

Sylvan’s face twisted, a cold sweat starting to bead down his temples.

‘What do you mean?” he asked back. “Behind our company are also the Fergusons and the Hacketts-two of the oldest and most established families in the capital. You’re not seriously going to disrespect them too, are you?”

“The Fergusons. The Hacketts. Anyone else?” the man asked curiously.

Witnessing that exchange of questions, the entire building fell into chaos.

“What the hell is going on? Why does it feel like this guy isn’t just asking about the families supporting Mr. Armitage? These people… Oh my god, are they here to bring those names down?”

“That can’t be. Who in this state would dare come after the Armitages, the Fergusons, the Hacketts, and the Lamonts-all at once?”

“But… What if it’s not a family? What if it’s the government?”

As those speculations dropped, the crowd fell into a rare silence.

Sylvan looked like he was starting to freak out. He must’ve sensed something was wrong. Not just wrong but deadly wrong.

His eyes locked tightly onto mine, and in a hoarse voice, he asked, “Cicely, what the hell have you been doing these past six years since you left?”

“What have I been doing?” I repeated with a scoff.

Raising my head, I looked up at the towering building of his company.

The corner of my lips curved into a mocking smile, and I said evenly, “Sylvan… did you really think you built this entire empire on your own after I left?”

I noticed his eyes widened as a memory seemed to flash in his mind.

Sylvan’s POV

Back then, not long after Cicely left, I’d met who’d later become the first major investor of my

company.

I was just a low-level employee in the sales department at the time.

That day, during a negotiation, the businessman was impressed with my performance and suggested I strike out on my own, promising he’d invest.

At first, I didn’t dare take such a huge risk. All I wanted was to raise our daughter in peace.

But I couldn’t resist the grand promises the business made.

Under his persistent persuasion, I finally worked up the courage to give entrepreneurship a try.

And then everything just…. clicked unexpectedly. It felt like the universe was working in my favor.

Early in my company’s startup phase, I already managed to secure contracts that even top corporations could only dream of landing.
