Chapter 115

…

Kane’s POV

Damn it, Kane…

I wasn’t mad at her. I was mad at everything else. The council. The threat. The fact that I couldn’t promise her safety without crossing

dozen red lines. But she didn’t know that. All she heard was the bite in my voice and the command in my tone

I sighed as we reached the end of the hall, then turned us toward the quiet wing where our room was

I didn’t mean to snap,I muttered, the words barely above a breath

Tessa looked up at me briefly, her expression unreadable in the dim light

I know,she said simply

That made it worse

somehow

We stepped into the room, and I shut the door behind us with a dull click. The quiet that followed was thick. Her hand slipped from mine

as she crossed to the bed and sank down onto the edge. I watched her pull her knees up, curling slightly like the weight of the day had

finally caught up with her

Maybe it had

Maybe it always had

I rubbed the back of my neck, standing there like an idiot in the doorway, torn between needing to prep for war and just sitting beside

her until she fell asleep

She didn’t look at me

I know you’re doing what you think is right, she said after a moment. But I’m not made of glass, Kane. If something’s coming, I want

to know.”

I swallowed the knot in my throat. And you will. Tomorrow. I swear it. Just not now.”

She nodded again, but her lips pressed into a thin line

I walked over and crouched in front of her, resting a hand lightly on her shin. I need you rested, angel. That’s why I’m not unloading

everything on you tonight. Not because I think you can’t handle it. You’re stronger than anyone I know.”

She looked down at me finally. Her eyes softened- only barely- but it was enough to let me breathe again

Chapter 115

…

I hate being left in the dark, she whispered

I hate keeping you there,I admitted

Another silence

Then finally, she leaned forward and pressed her forehead against mine. I closed my eyes, letting her warmth ground me

We’ll get through this, she said, more to herself than me. Whatever this is.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell her just how deep the council’s knife was buried

So I held her hand instead

And when she finally crawled beneath the covers and pulled the blankets to her chin, I sat on the edge of the bed, watching her breathe.

ran my fingers across her head, my touch gentle and hopefully grounding to help send her off to sleep

I decided to shower before bed, to cool myself off and to clear my head, before moving to join her

I could still feel the weight of her voice in the room behind me-I’m not made of glass.”

No, she wasn’t. But that didn’t mean she deserved to be shattered again and again for the sake of a war she didn’t start

My jaw clenched as I straightened, dragging a hand down my face

I hadn’t wanted to snap at her. I hadn’t wanted to lie, even if it was technically just delaying the truth. But what was I supposed to say

Hey, sweetheart, we might need to smuggle ourselves across borders again before the council strings us up for treason

Yeah. That’d go down well

I killed the water and stepped out, drying off quickly and pulling on a pair of sweats. I hesitated as I stared at the fogged mirror before

then wiped it clean with the flat of my palm

My reflection stared back

Drawn. Coldeyed. Older than I remembered looking

You don’t get to crack now, I told myself. Not when she needs you steady

I stepped back into the room quietly. The lights were off, but the pale glow of the moon filtered in through the window, painting the

space in silverblue

She was still awake. I could tell by the way her breathing slowed when I moved, deliberate and forced like she wanted me to think she was

sleeping

She was silly to think I couldn’t sense everything and anything about her, but it was somewhat cute to think she had woken up due to

being left alone whilst I showered

She needed me just as much as I needed her…

I didn’t say anything. Just slipped under the covers beside her and reached for her gently

For a heartbeat, she didn’t move

Then- slowly- she shifted, curling into me with a quiet exhale, her head finding the hollow of my shoulder like it belonged there

It did

I held her tighter than I meant to

Maybe I needed the comfort more than she did tonight

Maybe I always had

I closed my eyes and let the rhythm of her breathing steady me. My wolf settled too, quiet for the first time in hours. Protective

Possessive. And vengeful as hell for what she’d endured

I wouldn’t fail her again

Not now

Not ever

Tomorrow would come. Kion’s office. Strategy. Escape plans, Smuggling routes

War

But for tonight-

Just her

Just this

I tightened my grip slightly, brushing a kiss to the top of her head as her breathing finally deepened for real

I’ve got you,I whispered into the dark

Chapter 115

Even if the world burned around me right now

Matemy wolf purred in the back of my mind, almost causing for me to chuckle out loud at his desperate attempt

Whilst she’s sleeping? I don’t think so! You can wait.I push back my inner response to earn a rough sigh in return

He wanted us to mark her, to make her ours entirely, especially before we leave this pack and I knew myself I would have to too

Maybe I could just…

I thought for a second, my fingers trickling up her back before reaching the exposed part of her bare neck which would soon hold the

mark of an Alpha like a trophy she had won

I could kiss hermake it gentlewake her up only enough before sinking my teeth in to her fleshit would be done, the first part

anyway…

It would be so easy to get it done right now…

But I wouldn’t

I would wait for her to give me the go ahead

I would do things right

With one last grounding breath of air, I shuffled slightly to get comfortable, before letting myself go
