Chapter 2
I followed Wyatt to Lumière.
The same fancy French spot in Manhattan where he took me on our first real date.
Back then we were broke as hell, both busting our asses to make it in our careers.
He’d blown half a month’s rent on that dinner.
“Babe, I swear–once I start making bank, we’re doing this all the time.”
He kept that promise. Once we had money, we came all the time.
Now that I was dead and he could start over, he deserved to move on.
People can’t live in the past forever.
He’d been through enough shit because of me.
I just wanted him to be happy for once.
He waited and waited. Sienna never showed.
Then his phone rang.
Whatever he heard made him panic. He bolted straight to the hospital.
Sienna was hurt–fractured left leg.
Thank god. At least it wasn’t as bad as what happened to me.
“Wyatt…” Her eyes were red, makeup streaked down her face.
“I’m so sorry. This is all my fault–I never should’ve texted you.”
Wyatt grabbed her shoulders. “What happened?”
She looked down, voice shaking.
“Mrs. Reid knows about us.”
“She came to see me today. Said this was just a warning, that if I don’t stay away from you….”
Her voice cracked.
“Next time she’ll kill me.”

Chapter 2
“I’m sorry, I know I’m being dramatic. I just… the way she looked at me…”
“I can’t ask you to get involved in this. Maybe I should just disappear.”
“But I’m so scared, Wyatt. I don’t know what to do.”
I froze.
What the hell? I’d never even met Sienna, let alone threatened her.
Why was she lying?
I stared at Wyatt, holding onto this tiny sliver of hope.
After eight years together, he had to know me better than this, right?
But he let me down.
His eyes filled with this rage I’d never seen before.
After calming Sienna down, he stepped into the hallway and called me over and over.
Obviously I couldn’t answer.
He opened our chat and sent a voice message.
“Delilah! Are you fucking DONE?! Huh?! Done with this bullshit?!”
“I’ve taken care of your ass for eight fucking years! EIGHT YEARS!”
“What more do you want from me?! What?!”
“And now–now you go after Sienna?! You actually went after her?!”
“What the fuck is wrong with you?! How can you be this fucking vicious?!”
“I was out of my goddamn MIND to marry you! Completely out of my mind!”
“You’re worthless! Fucking worthless! That’s what you are!”
“All you do is drag everyone down! That’s it! That’s all you fucking do!”
Every word felt like a punch to the gut.
f I were still alive, I don’t know how I would’ve survived hearing that.
ut whatever. I was already dead. Dead people don’t feel heartbreak.
aybe this was better. If he hated me, he could let go and move on.

Chapter 2
Wyatt went back to Sienna’s room and pulled her into his arms.
That night, he didn’t come home.
Next day, morning light hit the balcony glass, lighting up the empty wheelchair.
Jax saw it and rolled his eyes.
“Mom, why are you up so early?”
No answer.
He clicked his tongue, annoyed. “Great. Ignoring me again. Whatever.”
There was warm milk and a fried egg on the table.
He’d learned how to make breakfast two years ago. Made me so proud. Broke my heart too.
Shame I’d never get to taste his cooking again.
I followed Jax downstairs.
A crowd had gathered at the front entrance of our building.
Through the people, I could see the pool of blood on the pavement.
I moved fast to block Jax’s view.
Didn’t want him to see me like that. Didn’t want him traumatized.
Luckily he only glanced once before looking away.
I breathed a sigh of relief and stayed with him until he left the complex.
The wind carried his whispered words.
“Should’ve been her.”
My heart clenched, then let go.
Jax, sweetheart. Your wish already came true.
I just hope you won’t be too sad when you find out.
Once Jax was out of sight, something yanked me back to Wyatt.
He was in bed with Sienna–half–dressed, her legs wrapped around his waist–when his phone started going off.
“Fuck’s sake.” He grabbed it without looking. “What?”

“Mr. Reid? Building management. We had a jumper last night from your floor. Woman–fits your wife’s description. Need you to come down and identify the body.”
