Chapter 4
Early next morning, Alex called.
For a foolish moment, hope flickered. Did he remember our wedding day?
His first words froze my blood.
“Scarlett… fell from four stories. Legs are fine… but she’s blind…”
“Could you…”
I fought the tremors wracking my body. “Could I what?”
Silence stretched. Then, he spoke. “Could you… donate your eyes
to
her?”
His breath rasped down the line. My hand shook so violently I nearly dropped the phone.
I thought yesterday was rock bottom.
This… was deeper, darker.
Swallowing a sob, my voice trembled. “Alex… what about… me?”
He paused, as if the question surprised him.
Finally, hesitant: “Well… you’re already… Missing one thing or another… doesn’t really change much. But Scarlett… she was healthy… she can’t handle this!”
His meaning was clear: I was already broken. Blind, deaf… what difference did it make?
I stared, eyes wide and dry, tears silently streaming.
“I’ll take care of you… I’ll be your legs… your eyes…”
He talked. I cried.
“Evelyn?”
Impatient when I didn’t answer.
I clenched my fist, forcing a smile onto my cracked lips. “Alright. I’ll do as you say. She took my legs… I’ll give her my eyes…”
I hung up before he could react. Before the dam broke and I screamed every curse I knew.
But… what was the point?

Chapter 4
He cared for me for four years. Consider it… settled.
On the day of the donation, I lured Alex to the hospital rooftop with a promise of fulfilling a “last wish.”
Seeing me in my wedding gown, he froze. “Why…?”
My smile was bleak. “If not now… then never.”
His expression flickered. He started to speak.
I cut him off, turning away. Tears welled. “Remember what you said… four years ago?”
He’d held me then, tears falling on my bloodied face.
“Evelyn, don’t die! I can’t live without you!” His cries had shattered my heart.
Four years later, that same hand, the one that traced my wounds, was shoved into her mouth, kissing her.
Mentioning the past softened Alex’s smile. He pulled me close, eyes gentle. “We’re soulmates,” he murmured, his voice warm.
So convincing. I almost believed him.
But the tears wouldn’t stop.
I spoke, lost in memory.
“After the amputation… the fever wouldn’t break. You, the skeptic… knelt until your knees bled, praying… begging for a miracle. Got me that jade Buddha…”
“After discharge… the phantom pain… I raged all night, wanting to die… You let me hit you… stayed by my bed…”
“You were so good to me then… You even offered… to cut off your own legs… for me…”
My voice shook in the cold wind.
But Alex’s eyes were glued to his phone.
“Ancient history… why dwell?” he mumbled.
He thought I was reminiscing.
He didn’t know I was saying goodbye.
He looked up, thumb brushing my tear–reddened eye.
“Don’t cry. I’ll take care of you,” he said, almost tenderly.
I smiled, knowing his lie better.
Chapter 4
His phone buzzed. His secretary. Instantly, urgency replaced tenderness, “Scarlett’s awakel We need to prep for surgery!”
I gazed at the stars, voice hollow. “Ten more minutes. I’ll… find you later.”
He grunted agreement. Turning to leave, he yanked the jade Buddha from my neck. A decisive, possessive gesture. As if it never belonged to me.
Floodlights bathed the hospital grounds in harsh white light..
His silhouette stretched long and lean.
Indistinguishable from the man who’d once loved me.
But I knew. The Alex who loved me… was gone.
This man belonged to her.
His polished shoes clicked sharply on the concrete.
As Alex walked step by step towards Scarlett, bathed in light…
I counted down my own end.

At the final second, I typed one last message.
Then, threw aside my crutches, closed my eyes, and launched myself forward.
“Alexander Vance. My life… a wedding gift.”
