Chapter 5
My body hit the pavement beside his feet.
The ground shuddered.
When Alex looked down, his eyes bulged. He dropped to his knees.
Warm blood soaked through his trousers. He could feel the heat of Evelyn Grant’s life seeping away.
His phone buzzed. Her final “blessing” flashed.
He ignored it. His world was reduced to the white lace stained crimson.
Alex froze for seconds that felt like hours. Trembling fingers reached for her neck. “Evelyn… Evelyn!” His voice cracked. “Talk to me! Please!”
The woman who’d smiled minutes ago… was gone. Silent.
Onlookers murmured:
“Is he the reason? Bringing a disabled woman up here at night… no good intention!”
“Looks respectable… trash! Call the cops!”
“No wonder she jumped! Crippled and dumped… heartbreaking!”
Alex, eyes wild, shook his head violently. He scooped up the broken body and charged towards the ER.
The surgery light blinked on… then off.
The doors opened. Alex lunged. “Is she…?”
A sob choked his voice.
The doctor shook his head, exhausted. “Mr. Vance… I’m sorry.”
Alex’s face turned ashen. He grabbed the doctor’s collar. “She’s NOT dead! TRY AGAIN!”
“She can’t be… We’re getting married!” The words unleashed a torrent of grief. He slammed his head against the wall, again and again.
His secretary arrived, pulling him away. He handed Alex a file. “Sir… the corneal donation consent Miss Grant signed today…”
Alex stared blankly. Pain, sharp and absolute, speared his chest.
He opened his mouth. Closed it. Finally, hoarsely: “When… did she sign?”

Chapter 5
“Today. She said…”
“Said WHAT?”
The secretary hesitated. “She said… If this is what he wants… my life is his to take.”
Alex closed his eyes. Tears streamed unchecked. “You fool…” he whispered, over and over. “You fool…”
He staggered into the operating room, hand trembling as he lifted the sheet.
Evelyn, fallen five stories, was unrecognizable. Bloodless skin, mottled bruises. Nothing remained of her beauty.
The woman who cherished beauty… chose this brutal end before him. Her despair must have been absolute.
He stumbled out, drenched in cold sweat.
His secretary approached, phone in hand. “Mr. Vance… should we proceed with Miss Rossi’s transplant? It was scheduled for tonight.” He held up a sealed evidence bag. “And this… was found on the roof. Miss Grant’s.”
