Chapter 3
Wyatt’s face went white.
He thought about the unanswered calls. Thought about the horrible things he’d said. Panic hit him like a freight train.
He immediately called Jax.
“Jax, Mom home?”
“Yeah. She’s being weird though.”
Wyatt’s whole body relaxed.
He let out this long breath and gave this bitter little laugh.
Right. Someone as stubborn as Delilah wouldn’t just kill herself.
He went back to normal.
“Jax. I’m divorcing her.”
“Wait–for real?!”
“Oh my god, Dad, FINALLY! Just marry Sienna! Mom’s been dragging my ass down forever. Don’t let her do it to you.”
Wyatt went quiet for a second.
“After, I’m putting her in one of those places overseas. Switzerland, maybe. You stay here.”
The excitement on the other end died instantly.
After a long pause, Jax spoke again.
“Dad. You don’t owe her. You did more than enough.”
“But she got paralyzed saving me. Can’t just ditch her like that.”
“If she’s going, I’m going.”
Wait, what?
I wasn’t expecting Jax to say that.
I thought he really hated me.
Wyatt seemed stunned too.

Chapter 3
“Jax, you don’t gotta put that on yourself. You-
“AHHH!”
A scream came from the hospital room.
Wyatt hung up immediately and rushed back inside.
A water glass lay shattered on the floor, water and glass everywhere.
Sienna looked shaken.
“Sorry, I dropped it.”
Wyatt scooped her up and set her gently back on the bed.
“You good? Did you cut yourself?”
Sienna shook her head, then asked carefully, “That call. You said divorce?”
She bit her lip.
“Wyatt, if this is gonna make things harder… we should stop. I don’t wanna mess things up.”
“Not about you.”
Wyatt cut her off.
“Me and her? Been over for years. It’s just Jax. Says he’s gotta go with her if she leaves.”
Sienna’s eyes went soft.
“God, he’s so sweet. Gets it from you.”
“But he’s too young to give up his whole life, you know? For something that happened so long ago.”
She hesitated.
“Want me to talk to him? Maybe he’d listen.”
Wyatt pulled her close, looking relieved.
I floated above them, not feeling jealous. Just worried.
Someone as selfish as Sienna… would she ever actually care about Jax?
Immediately, Wyatt drafted up the divorce papers.
At least he had some conscience left–he was giving me most of his assets.

But he didn’t look happy about it.
Was he sad?
“Delilah, I’m sorry. I can’t do this anymore.”
Tears rolled down his face.
My heart ached watching him.
After the accident, when I was stuck in bed, he woke up at five every morning to make me breakfast and help with physical
therapy.
Every night he massaged my stiff legs, going from clumsy to actually knowing what he was doing.
For my sake, he turned down every out–of–state project and worked from home, juggling business calls while I screamed and threw things.
Eight years. He’d been good to me for eight years.
Most people wouldn’t have lasted half that long.
“I just wanna live like a normal person. Why is that so fucking hard?”
His voice cracked.
He was only in his mid–thirties–still young. He shouldn’t have to drown in this mess with me.
I was the one holding him back.
I should’ve left sooner.
So I floated back to our place on the twenty–second floor.
The balcony felt freezing. The wheelchair sat exactly where I’d left it.
Beep beep beep.
The five o’clock alarm went off.
Right. Jax would be getting out of school soon.
I still had one more chance to pick him up.
I floated outside his school in Brooklyn, waiting and waiting.
Finally I saw him walking toward me. And I waved.
He was smiling, waving back.

I rushed forward, so happy I could cry.
But he walked straight through me and into Sienna’s arms.
