Chapter 1
Hunter Drake had a childhood friend who was totally unhinged.
We started dating–she jumped in the lake.
Our anniversary–she slit her wrists.
Her lies got exposed over and over, but Hunter kept enabling her.
“Avery, chill. Bella’s just spoiled. Her parents babied her. Don’t take it personally.”
Right up until our wedding, when she crashed it with a cancer diagnosis.
Hunter ditched me at the altar and hit every bar in town looking for his precious princess.
Found her wasted in some stranger’s arms.
He went ballistic, trashed the whole place, said he was done with her bullshit.
But then she dumped ice water on herself and went racing up the mountain.
He still chased after her.
I begged him not to go. Said I’d die if we didn’t get married.
He didn’t even look back. “Bella already tried that. You copying her now?”
That night, he held her watching the sunrise on the mountain.
And I died alone in my own blood.
By the tenth system warning, Hunter was already shaking me off and heading for the door.
“Avery, come on. You’re being just as dramatic as Bella right now. You’re usually the chill one–don’t start with me, okay? Let me get her back safe, then we’ll do this whole wedding thing. Promise.”
The door slammed, letting in a blast of cold air that stung my eyes.
The tears came anyway.
God, not again.
I’d lost count of how many times it was: “Her family’s screwed up, she only has me.”

Chapter 1
No matter how many times Bella lied to his face, he’d still drop everything for her.
And tonight? One call about her death wish driving, and she’d stolen him from me again
The system in my head flashed red.
[WARNING: Final chance. Exchange rings before midnight or contract termination proceeds.]
Hunter’s taillights were already gone.
I called him with shaking hands, pain shooting through my chest.
Six rings before he picked up, Hunter’s voice breathless: “What?”
“Just the rings. Can we do just the rings?”
I stared at the sunset, trying to keep it together.
“Before midnight tonight. Our church. Just exchange rings, that’s it.”
His tone went flat. “You’re seriously gonna bug me about this right now?”
“Ahhhh! Faster, Hunter! This is insane!”
Bella’s shriek cut right through me.
Hunter’s voice went soft for her: “Hold tight, don’t fall off.”
“Hunter, I’m talking to you.”
My voice was shaking, but he barely gave me half his attention: “Yeah, got it. Wait for me, I’ll be there.”
He still thought I was just copying Bella’s playbook.
Whatever. As long as he showed up.
As long as he came, I’d live.
But I sat in that church in my wedding dress, rings in hand, waiting and waiting.
The moon came up, disappeared behind clouds. Thirty minutes left.
Still no Hunter.
The system warnings were getting louder in my head.
The closer to deadline, the worse the pain got.

Chapter 1
The countdown in my head kept ticking.
One minute left.
Hunter’s call came through.
Maybe he was coming. I hit answer with the last of my strength.
“Hunter, I’m at the-”
“Hunter, what if… what if my dying wish was for you to marry me? Would you?” Bella’s voice.
I froze.
Then her voice was already crying: “Never mind, I was just kidding…”
“Yeah… okay…” Hunter said.
