Chapter 2
Death came fast.
After one last wave of pain, I was floating before I even knew what happened.
I hovered above the church, looking down at myself–wedding dress, blood everywhere.
The cancer had made me so thin. The dress Hunter helped me pick months ago was way too big now.
Just like our relationship–twenty years from school uniforms to wedding dresses.
Maybe I hadn’t been the one in his heart for a long time.
I thought I’d just disappear. Game over.
But white light flashed, and suddenly I was on the mountain.
“Hunter, if I’d come back sooner, would you be marrying me instead? I’m so sorry. I’ll never be dramatic again, I swear. My stupid tantrums ruined everything.”
Bella’s voice cut right through me.
I floated there with the sunrise behind me, watching them hold each other.
The same guy who’d promised to come back and marry me was holding his childhood sweetheart like she was his whole world.
He didn’t answer her. Just slid my ring–the one meant for me–onto her finger.
The sun hit its peak. The ring slid all the way down.
I was right there, close enough to touch them.
The bitterness in my throat was killing me all over again.
Coming down the mountain, he finally remembered to call me back.
But Hunter, I was dead.
No one was ever picking up again.
He listened to it ring and ring until it went to voicemail, his face getting darker each time.
Bella watched him nervously. “Are you leaving?”
He wouldn’t.

Chapter 2
I knew he wouldn’t. He’d never ditch his precious princess for me.
“Nah, I promised I’d stay with you. Don’t worry about it.”
Before tossing his phone aside, he texted me:
[There’s a limit to throwing tantrums. We both need space to cool off.]
His idea of “cooling off“? Taking Bella all over the city, saying yes to every crazy thing she wanted.
For days, he didn’t think about me once.
Just checked his phone sometimes when he was with her.
No more “annoying” texts from me. No more calls.
Clean and quiet. No one nagging him to come home or reminding him to eat.
Bet he loved the peace.
Bella was always good at playing her part.
The sixth time Hunter checked his phone that day, her smile finally cracked.
“Maybe you should go back? You’ve been with me way too long…”
“No need.”
He didn’t even look up.
“I think I spoiled her. If she’s gonna throw fits over stupid stuff like this, maybe I need to think twice about whether she’s wife material.”
