Chapter 3
That casual words “wife material” cut through me like a blade.
Not love? Not even like?
After twenty years together, all I was to him was a “wife material“?
But he was the one who chased me-
Back then, I didn’t even know what love meant. My world was just darkness, moldy walls, stinking alleys, and my dad’s fists.
I thought that was my life forever. Then Hunter showed up.
This bright kid with his sense of justice–like fireworks lighting up my nightmare.
The same guy who saved me from my dad, pulled me out of that hell, promised he’d always protect me–now his eyes were cold when he talked
about me.
Even dead, as a ghost, I pressed my hand to my silent chest. I’d seen this coming through all his choices, but hearing him say it still ripped me
apart.
A phone buzzed, breaking the moment.
Hunter answered cheerfully, thinking it was me: “What? Finally ready to apologize?”
Pause. Then harsh laughter from the other end.
“Yo Drake! Who’s got you whipped now? Someone giving you drama?”
His smile vanished instantly.
The voice didn’t wait: “Imperial Club tonight. You in?”
Hunter was about to decline, but Bella’s face lit up. He switched gears.
“Yeah, we’ll be there.”
Before hanging up: “I’m bringing someone who doesn’t drink. Stock up on sodas.”
Still babying Bella like always.
Somehow my soul was tethered to Hunter. So I got dragged along to watch this trainwreck.
The club was all flashing lights and chaos.
But what really twisted the knife? Watching Hunter.
Three minutes ago, they’d started a game of King’s Orders.
Whoever drew the King card got to command. The King picked number one and number three to kiss.
Of course Hunter drew number one. Of course Bella got number three.

Everyone was whooping and hollering, with a few muttered comments: “Maybe we shouldn’t… if his girl finds out, she’ll lose her shit.”
I blocked out everything else, just staring at Hunter.
This was it. The test. Did I still mean anything to him?
He glanced at his silent phone and smirked. “Let’s do it.”
Let’s do it…
Something inside me just… died.
The crowd went wild.
Phones came out, people were whistling, the whole room was eating it up.
“Damn, Drake! You’re not scared your girlfriend’s gonna blow up your phone?”
Hunter held Bella’s blushing face, eyes on his phone like he was making a point.
“Scared of what? She’s not here. It’s just a game. If she wants to make drama out of this, that’s her problem.”
But I was here.
Hunter, I’m right in front of you.
When he kissed her, I saw Bella’s smug little smile perfectly.
But no one could hear me screaming.
I stood in the middle of the chaos, completely alone.
Digging my nails into my palms, tears burning behind my eyes.
The system spoke up for the first time in forever: [Host, you can look away.]
“And then what?”
I couldn’t stop staring at him under those lights–the same guy who used to tell me he loved
“If I don’t watch, it doesn’t happen?”
The system hesitated: [At least it wouldn’t hurt as much.]
I laughed bitterly. “No difference.”
Actually, seeing it all made me realize how stupid I’d been.
I really thought he was my savior. My way out of hell.
But fairy tales are just fairy tales.

I wasn’t the main character. Hunter was also just a breeze that passed through my life–didn’t even leave a mark.
Hunter walked out of the club after twenty–four hours of complete radio silence from me.

Our chat was still stuck on his last message from three hours ago:
[Avery, you’ve been so good lately. What do you want? I’ll buy it for you–a reward for being such a good girl, yeah?]
Like he was throwing scraps to a dog.
I stood there in silence, watching him.
His face got darker with every passing minute.
Three minutes later, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
But he was sure it was me: “Finally figured out what you want? Ready to stop being a brat?”
A cold male voice answered: “Mr. Hunter Drake? Your wife died yesterday at Spring Mountain Chapel. We need you to come to the station.”
Hunter froze.
For like half a second. Then he laughed bitterly, looking disgusted.
“Avery Wilde’s still playing games? She’s gonna die if we don’t get married right this second? Tell her if she wants to keep acting crazy, she can find someone else. I’m not desperate!”
He hung up, eyes blazing.
His buddy who’d followed him out chuckled: “Damn, she really got under your
Bella started to protest.
But Hunter just sneered.
skin? Just marry the girl already. Put her out of her misery.”
“Marrying her is my choice. She’s been living off me for years–food, clothes, everything. She should know her place. Does she really think because I spoil her, she gets to boss me around and force my hand?”
