Chapter 6
I finally wore myself out and fell into a heavy sleep right there.
I had a dream.
In the dream, Mom had cooked my favorite food and was waiting for me after school, and when I got downstairs she was calling my nickname from the upstairs window.
“Luna, come up quick–there’s pie for dinner!” she called.
The scene flipped to before I left for school abroad, Mom insisted I study overseas while Dad sneered that what good world sore schooling do a girl–too much education and she won’t get married, it’s a waste of money.
Mom argued her heart out and ended up working two jobs to pay for my education.
I woke up with tears in my eyes and kept walking up the stairs in a daze.
The hallway suddenly filled with a howling wind like something was trying to keep me from moving
But nothing could stop me from getting justice for Mom.
My phone’s search function worked again, and following the website’s instructions I pricked the tip of my finger and let a drop of blood fall on my fingertip, bracing against the biting wind as I climbed.
One step, two steps, three steps…
The doorplate “602” appeared in front of me and I froze, not daring to move, squeezing my hand around the knife.
I pressed my ear to the door and heard heavy chopping and a man coughing–like an old smoker.
My heart thumped, I swallowed my fear and knocked.
“Hi, we’re from the community outreach–today we’re handing out pies to the seniors,” I lied.
The chopping stopped inside, but no one opened,
I knocked again.
“Hello? You’re on my route–this is the last stop, you gotta sign the form or I’m gonna get chewed out by my boss.”
“Hello? Please open up!”
I banged louder, pounding on the door.
“Say something–don’t be dead in there, ‘cause if you’re dead I’m calling the cops!”
There was a frantic rustling inside, like someone scrambling.
After a while the door creaked and slowly swung open.
I kept my head down and first saw a pair of black shoes splattered with blood.
1 Inocked in—blood everywhere on the floor and huge piles of raw meat on the kitchen counter.

I forced a smile and lifted the knife I’d been hiding behind my back.
But the person who opened the door froze me in place.
1 looked from him to the doorplate “602,” and my voice shook as I whispered, Dan‘
