Chapter 5
- 5.
I stared blankly at the nurse before scrambling inside in a panic.
“My Amy, please be okay.”
“My sweet girl, you have to be okay.”
Inside the ward, my Amy lay deathly pale on the hospital bed, eyes tightly shut.
As if asleep.
Before my fingers could touch her cheek, my wrist was seized.
Frank’s icy voice cut through the air. “Keep drawing!”
The nurse hesitated. “Mr. Garcia, any more could-”
Ignoring my struggles, Frank snapped coldly:
“Just a little more. We need enough.”
“No!”
Tears streamed down my face. “Frank, you can’t!”
As the nurse aimed the needle at my daughter’s hand, I sank my teeth into Frank’s arm.
Shoving him aside, I threw myself over Amy.
“Amy…”
“Open your eyes for Mommy?”
No response. She lay motionless like a lifeless doll.
Trembling, I reached to check her breath-
Only to be flung backward by an iron grip.

“Catherine,” Frank snarled, “don’t you dare delay this. Hold her back or you’ll regret it.”
“Draw: Now‘
My sobs echoed, but Frank remained unmoved.
“Frank, I’m begging you–stop!”
“Find a doctor…”
“Please!”
The nurse tried again, voice thick with pity. “Mr. Garcia, truly, we can’t-”
Frank’s reply hit like a dagger to my heart.
Crawling to his feet, I clutched his trousers.
“I’m on my knees begging you. No more.”
“She’ll die if you keep drawing!”
“Get her a doctor, Frank… please.”
He didn’t glance down.
“Draw!”
I lunged forward–Frank pinned me hard.
“No!”
“STOP!”
The needle pierced Amy’s blue–tinged arm before my eyes.
Desperation choked me. “Frank, I’ll beg on my knees.
“Take mine! Take my blood instead!”

The blood tube filled anyway.
Then… stillness.
Panic flashed in Frank’s eyes. “GET A DOCTOR NOW!”
“WHERE’S THE DOCTOR?!”
I scrambled over–no heartbeat.
Doctors rushed in, wheeling Amy to resuscitation.
I collapsed, numb.
Darkness swallowed me.
I woke two days later.
Frank slumped by my bed, exhaustion etching his face.
My chest seized with fresh agony.
Tears traced my temples. “Amy?”
Frank’s voice rasped. “Next ward.”
I stumbled from bed, legs buckling.
Frank caught me. “You haven’t eaten. Let me—‘
I ignored him completely.
Shoving free, I staggered toward the next room.
Through the window, I saw her-
Alone. Ventilator. Tubes all over.
I reached for the door–Frank’s arms locked around me.
“Cat, stop!” he pleaded. “She’s still critical!”

I froze at those last words.

Frank couldn’t look at me.
My eyes glazed over, legs nearly giving out.

Frank steadied me, voice strained: “The doctor said it was excessive blood loss… heart condition.”
My whole body went limp.
