Chapter 51

Chapter 35

Colette’s heart was pounding as she moved through the crowded apartment, her faded jeans and loose tshirt making her feel conspicuously out of place. The judgmental stares she received from the guests were piercing, each glance a silent reminder of her apparent mismatch with the high status gathering around her. She kept her head down, her eyes scanning the room for Matt, but he was nowhere to be seen

The apartment, once a haven, now felt alien. Her and Matt’s bedroom had been converted into a coat storage, an unwelcome reminder of her displacement. It hurt more than she expected for some reason. For the first time, she felt anonymous, her casual attire blending her into the background. She was almost relieved that the guests from Matt’s office didn’t know her well enough to recognize her

With her back to the wall she stood for a while, watching the scenes. When Excuse me,Some pale blonde woman dressed in an emrald green sheath dress almost knocked her over and looked at her like she was the dirt below her shoe with her faded jean and loose tshirt. The catering team is in the kitchen, you know.As far as insults went, it wasn’t really one. Because to be mistaken as a help in her own house was the least of her problems now

But it was a hint nonetheless, that it was time for her to leave this place. She didn’t look anywhere anymore, she kept her head down and walked towards the door, opened it and walked out as another bunch of guests carrying gifts came out of the elevator, she blended right in and disappeared. Her mistake!she realized with a shiver as she flagged down another taxi from the curb. her mistake completely! To have come here in the first place. Maybe Matt had been right to keep her away from parties and stuff, she was an embarrassment

She kept her head down and walked briskly towards the door. As she opened it and stepped outside, she blended seamlessly with another group of guests coming out of the elevator

The empty elevator doors opened at the ground floor and suddenly she was shocked glued to her spot. Matt stood there, looking utterly dishevelled and breathless. His clothes were rumpled, and his hair was tousled, giving him a frazzled look. The sight of him, so out of character and so clearly distressed, struck Colette with a jolt of emotion

His eyes locked onto hers, and they widened in disbelief. For a moment, time seemed to freeze. The chaotic noise of the party fell away as the reality of their encounter settled in. Matt’s face, etched with exhaustion and worry, transformed into a look of profound relief and joy. The strain in his features softened into a mixture of surprise and happiness as he took in the sight of her standing there

Colette! You are here! His voice, strained yet unmistakably relieved, broke through the silence. There was a catch in his breath, as if the weight of his worry had been lifted all at once. I’ve been looking everywhere for you. I was so worried. I couldn’t find you anywhere, andI was terrified something had happened.”

His arms reached out toward her with a desperate, almost frantic energy. The gesture was both a plea for reassurance and an instinctive attempt to bridge the gap between them

He was right, Colette realized as her gaze fell upon her phone, her heart sank. The screen was littered with over twenty missed calls from Matt

When she looked up, Matt’s expression was one of sweet, almost innocent excitement. His smile was warm, his eyes sparkling with a mix of mischief and anticipation. I’ve been trying to reach you because I had a surprise planned,he said, his voice carrying a note of genuine enthusiasm

The mention of a surprise should have sparked her curiosity, but Colette felt a knot of unease tightening in her chest. Was he really going to pretend like nothing was wrong between them, that they were not at the verge of a divource. What the hell was he playing at? Plus, The gravity of their conversation about the baby was too pressing to ignore. She didn’t want any surprise She didn’t care. Her face remained a stoney mask as Matt took her hand and guided her back towards the elevator

was probably the party, though god know what he had to celebrate though! She couldn’t bring herself to ask about it; the thought of anything more added to the whirlwind of emotions she was already grappling with

As Matt guided her to their apartment door, he fumbled with his keys, his excitement barely contained. When he finally opened the door, a rush of applause and cheers greeted them. The jubilant noise was overwhelming, and Colette stood there, momentarily frozen, as the reality of the situation dawned on her
