Monday could not get here any sooner. After a morning of midterms, I head to base for the King’s official military duties. My grandmother finally called to tell me she was already on her way back. Which translates to my time is up, and this rejection chapter in my life will finally come to an end.
I had to call in to cancel my afternoon shift with Aimee. She didn’t sound surprised since our work contract is about to finish in a few days. I’m both nervous and excited for the next stage in my training. I have to admit that I am also happy about taking a break from the Capitol. This is home, but being here is not only stressful for me, but for the guys as well. The three of us have been trying our best to keep it together since we arrived.
Getting into my uniform again feels good. Like I have a purpose. As I make my way through the base to get to the briefing hall, I say hello to those who work here. They bow to me, and all I can do is wave back. Ragnar, Ivar, and their father have scolded me for bowing back to those who bow to me. It’s not easy to get used to. I’m not used to people acknowledging me in this manner.
“You’re early,” Ragnar says when I walk in to find him sitting at the front of the hall with a laptop in front of him.
“If you’re on time, you’re late,” I quote his favorite line from basic training. He smiles without looking up from the laptop “Do we know her ETA?”
“She’ll be here in the morning. My dad is talking to the Generals,” he glances up, and his smile turns soft. “How were your midterms?”
“Two down,” I sigh and take a seat in the front row. “They were brutal, but I think I did well.”
“Before the others get here,” he waves me forward. I groan and stand to go around his table. “This just came in today. It’s going to be a long week.”
He opens up an email. The first thing that comes up is the Council of Hierarchy’s crest. It’s a summons for me. I turn the laptop to me and see that it’s not a summons from his father, but from the Alpha King. I look over at him, knowing exactly why I’m being summoned.
For someone who has supposedly turned his back on the Romanos, he sure is cutting them a lot of slack. This matter has to be settled before the Lycans can take over the city, or it’ll look like Ragnar is trying to keep Santiago’s mate, and that’s something the council is not going to allow. Mates, slavery, and unsolicited attacks are off limits and punishable by death according to the treaty.
“This is bullshit, I push the laptop away. I reach for my phone and message Kennedy’s brother. “Can you forward that to
me?
“Sure,” he agrees.
My phone pings twice. I send the email to Alariq and let out a heavy sigh. The email clearly states that this is about the rejection. There is a formal apology letter from Malcolm and Santiago. Malcolm is apologizing for not investigating the issue more thoroughly and is very sorry for the misunderstanding Santiago’s is the usual bullshit he’s always texting to
The reply comes back immediately. He already knows and tells me he’ll be at the house later tonight with all the files 1 sent him, since my grandmother asked me to put together anything that may help should this ever happen. Usually, reversing a mating is fast and easy when both parties want to reunite.

“Alariq is coming over tonight. Will you be there?” I ask him. He places his hand over mine and nods. “I have to talk to my grandmother so there aren’t any surprises at the trial. I know she’s not going to let me go into this alone.”
“You might want to skip your run in the morning then. You need to tell her before you head to school for your final midterms. I’m sorry this is still happening,” he sighs. “I wish getting rid of that stupid fuck was as easy as that.”
“Me too, but this way, no one is going to question what comes next. Everything is going to be out in the open,” I sigh.
“Hey. There is nothing you need to be embarrassed by. You did nothing wrong. Not yet, anyway,” he smirks. “The others are arriving. Let’s set this aside for now, Little Wolf. Take your seat.”
I nod and take a seat, but there is no way I’m going to be able to simply forget it. Kennedy and the rest of the team arrive first. The other team slowly make their way in as we prepare for the arrival of the armadas the King sent for. It’s up to us to explain what will happen once we enter Artume City.
“I want to thank you all for coming in today,” Ragnar starts when the doors are finally shut. “I know a lot of you are still upset about not being included in the first attack to take over Artume City. I want you all to know that you will finally be getting your chance to make up for the lost opportunity,” the Lycans growl in approval. “This next attack is going to be the most
unsavory.
“The Romanos are recruiting Rogues to help them with the lack of weaponry and supplies. Thanks to our allies, the Polluccis have given us a list of rogues already residing in Artume City, along with their ranks and areas of expertise.
“You’re all here today because Major General Helvig will be arriving in the morning with the armadas to overwhelm the Alpha soldiers of the City. You will all be divided into leading teams to brief them on your assignments. You will all have two days to get acquainted with your assigned teams and review the coordination I have set up for you.
“I know this is a bit rushed, but I want to get this done before Monday. I want Artume City Renamed and Lycan owned by
the time we head out for intense training. This is our first official mandate under the new reign. Let’s show the old timers, our time is now. When I call your team’s name, leaders, come up to receive your briefing packages.”
