The scars on Anastasia Polucci’s body are essentially gone. She sent for me, and I agreed to meet with her when I was done with work and school. The Alpha King promised Ragnar that he would release a statement tonight informing everyone that the Romanos are to blame for the attacks in Artume City and that they no longer fall under his jurisdiction.
Artume City will be a lost city thanks to the negligence and illegal transactions they have dealt with the Rogues that attacked Artume, causing so many lives. He’s sent over some paperwork stamped with the royal seal, saying that he had no idea what was going on and that he would not be a part of the consequences that come with an attempt at breaking the treaty with the Lycan King and his family.
It’s all I’ve been thinking about since the meeting held after Ragnar came back from the King’s Temple. We haven’t had much to talk about since. I don’t know what I expected once he removed the mark, but the way he’s pulled away has me a bi worried. I see his grief every time he sees me unexpectedly.t He tries to cover it up, and I don’t know how to address the issue.
“You’ve seemed a little out of it all day,” Aimee says when we start cleaning up to close the clinic. We have one last person in the back, and we’re waiting for her and her son to leave. “You know you don’t have to worry about Ana. She’s doing a whole. lot better thanks to you.”
“I didn’t really do anything for her. I just used the water,” I say, and finish putting the files away.
The woman comes out from the back. Her son is not fully dressed after getting his immunizations and a physical. I crouch down and offer him a sucker for being so brave for Dr. Polucci. He smiles back at me and takes it. She bows to the two of us, and we watch her make it to one of the last cars in the parking lot without a problem. Once she’s gone, the two of us finish cleaning up.
“Will you be coming over later?” she asks.
“Yeah, I have some things to do with the King, and I want to shower,” I nod. She stops me before I can run away. That is what it feels like I’m doing. Running away. I don’t know why it’s felt that way for the past three days.
“You know you can talk to me about anything, right? We’re friends,” she says gently.
“Yeah, I’m just tired of everything happening in Artume. I kind of just want it to be over,” I admit.
“Okay,” she gives my shoulder a squeeze.
The two of us walk out together, and I wait for her to shut the door. In the tree line behind my car. I see the woman who’s been watching over me whenever Ragnar isn’t around, and I wave to her. It always catches her off guard when I spot her, and a part of me thinks it’s funny because I know she’s trying her best not be seen.
As soon as I get home, I head up to my room for a hot shower and to change into something more appropriate for tonight. I still have half the flask left over from the last time I treated Anastasia.
By the time I finished getting ready, Ragnar arrived while I was working on a paper for school. He sits beside me and allows me to finish without saying a word. This is weird territory. I don’t know what is happening or why we’re letting the silence carry on as it is, but I don’t have it in me to demand. I don’t know how to.
I glance over at him to see that he’s wearing a black suit with a dark blue undertone. His hair is slicked back. He looks like the King I know him to be. His scent is an elegant combination of his natural scent and cologne.
“Are you almost finished? Santiago and Anastasia are waiting for us,” he finally breaks the silence. I don’t know what it is, but dread sweeps down my spine.
“I’m finished,” I announce, unable to shake the all too familiar feeling in my chest

“The medical team is the most important part of the team. You might be the reason why they survive, she pats my head and walks over to her giant desk. I try my best to block out the memory of seeing her there for the first time. She looks nothing like that anymore. “And I require your medical expertise regarding a wolf. I’m hoping you can tell me which points I can hir without killing one of them.”
