I replay what she said over and over in my head, trying to make sense of it, and Anastasia Polucci stares back at me, expecting an actual answer. All I can do is stare at her because getting back at the Romanos and hurting wolves because of whatever the hell she’s in the business of are two completely different things. I don’t want to hurt anyone, but I understand that my former mate and his family might have to be the exception.
“Excuse me?” I am appalled by her request. She takes a deep breath and rearranges herself to get more comfortable.
“We were able to catch a wolf that requires a little more persuasion than usual, and you know these things inside and out. I know you worked at Artume General. If it’s a morality issue, I can assure you that he wasn’t here watching Aimee, and we found this,” she reaches into a drawer and tosses a stack of pictures on the desk.
They slide across, spreading out to reveal pictures of me and others I’m around at the clinic. There are even photos of my guard. The images make me sick to my stomach. However, I know these were taken because Santiago ordered whoever this wolf is to do this. I pick them all up, organize them for her, and set them back down between us.
“I understand what you’re trying to say and that maybe you’re trying to look out for me in your own way. But I would like to make it very clear if we are to continue being friends, Miss Polucci. I will never keep someone alive so that you can continuously torture them.
“Whether they are a wolf, a Lycan, a vampire, or any living thing. It’s never going to happen, and I would like to inform you that you have deeply offended me by asking me to do so. I’m going to find Ragnar, and we’re going home. Thank you for your hospitality.”
I stand up to leave, not sure how I feel about tonight’s visit. I had come in here already feeling like hell, and this has fully drained what little energy I had left.
“What if I told you that if you didn’t do this for me, I would break my agreement with the King?” she asks as I reach for the door. I stop and turn around to face her.
“I would say it’s a pity. Ragnar hates you enough as it is. I’d advise you to move at your own discretion.”
She doesn’t like that. Her eyes flash, and her threatening to go back on her deal despite what Ragnar did for her pisses me off. Everything in my body screams possessively. I can feel my affinity take the wheel. On its own, it reaches out for the moisture in her body. She groans, I up the speed in her pulse.
“You can threaten me and disrespect me all you want, but the one thing you will never do is disrespect my King. I am and will always be on his side, even if it kills me. Don’t ever threaten him again,” I release her, and she gasps. “Have a good night, Anastasia. I hope you learned something about me the same way I’ve learned something about you.”
She tries to catch her breath for a moment, but I don’t give her the chance to address me again. I walk out of her study to find Aimee waiting for me. She smiles and motions for me to follow after her without saying a word. The guys both stand when we walk in.
“Can we please go home?” I ask without hesitation.
Ragnar knows I was upset before we even got out of the car, so he doesn’t argue. We excuse ourselves, and when we get outside, the car is already waiting for us. I can’t bring myself to look up at him or say goodbye to Aimee or her mate.
“Are you okay?” Ragnar asks me as I try to catch my breath.
“I may have fucked up your agreement with Anastasia,” I whisper. He shifts uncomfortably in his seat.
“Elaborate?”

She asked me to tell her how she could keep a wolf alive so she can torture him. When I told her that her request offended me, she tried to threaten me with backing out of your deal, and I attacked her with my affinity,” I rush out in one breath.
The silence is heavy in the air for a long time. We’re almost home when he laughs. I glance over at him to see him smiling.
You attacked her with your affinity, how?”
‘I spun the water in her body,” I whisper. He looks between the road and me a few times.
You can do that?” he asks.
‘Apparently,” I sigh.
As soon as the car stops, I get out again and start to head inside. He’s at my side and turning me around to face me in an instant. He didn’t even turn the car off. I look up at him, feeling completely drained and done with today.
“What’s up? You were upset since I got back,” he drops his hand. “What’s wrong?”
You tell me. I’ve been getting pretty good at reading when people don’t want me around. If you need time to regret you decision, do it somewhere else, but please stop punishing me with your silence.” I step away from him and open the door.
He stands there for a bit. Long enough that I shut the door and start going up the stairs.
‘Miss?” Eliza stops me. “You haven’t eaten anything in a while. I can make you something light.”
‘I’m not hungry. Please prepare a guest bedroom for the king and ask him not bother me tonight. I have the day off tomorrow, and I want to sleep in.”
‘Of course, my lady. Rest well,” she says gently.
I shut the door behind me when I get to my room and lock it. I lock the windows and the balcony before getting in the shower. My phone is ringing when I get out. I run over to it answer when I see it’s an unknown number.
‘Sophia,” I answer as I pull my sock on.
“You answered,” the voice stops me dead in my tracks. I take a deep breath and let out a heavy sigh.
‘Former Luna Romano,” I clear my throat. “To what do I owe this displeasure?”
‘Cute,‘ she laughs coldly. “You’ve always been a clever little Omega, haven’t you?”
“Not clever enough to know you were fucking snake, apparently,” I scoff, putting the phone on speaker and tossing it on the bed beside me so that I can finish putting my socks on.
“And what exactly made me a snake?” she scoffs. “You had everything your heart desired. All you had to do was remain loyal to my son.”
“Sure, while he fucked the pick me commoner whore of Artume City You really know how to pick them, Mrs. Romano. She must have reminded you of your young self,” I roll my eyes. “What do you want?”
“It’s so easy for you to disrespect me while you’re all tucked away in your grandmother’s house. I hear you’re whoring yourself out to the King as his little plaything”
“Who gets to play with me is none of your concern. It never has been. I scoff. “And I would love nothing more than for you to be standing in front of me, right now. I’ve had a long fucking day.”

“Santiago is going feral. He doesn’t want to mark his chosen because he firmly believes that you are coming back to him. I’m calling you as his mother.”
“Hmm.” I hum. “To do what exactly?”
“Stop this, Sophia. Come home. You know you belong to him and him only. He will forgive you and reinstate everything he took. All you have to do is listen.”
“I don’t know what has led you to believe that I want any of the half–assed shit I had when I was there,” I scoff.
“Excuse me? You were thriving here. More than any filthy omega in our entire history,” she growls.
“I wouldn’t say that in the slightest. Not after I’ve seen what I can do without you breathing down my neck. I am only ever going to say this once, Mrs. Romano and I would like for you to remember it for whatever is left of your pathetic life.
“Fuck you and your tit–suckling pussy of a son. I’m glad he’s rotting, and it gives me so much more pleasure now that I know it’s hurting you to see him fall apart that way. When you see him, I want you to take a really good look at what you have done because it was you who did that to him. Don’t ever call me again.”
“I know what you did,” she says when I reach for my phone to hang up. “You killed my grandson. The heir to our pack.”
“I sure did. I didn’t want my bloodline to be stained with your worthless criminal genetics. Have a good night, Mrs. Romano. Enjoy what time you have left. I hope that you make better life choices in your next life, you stupid bitch.”
