It was week nineteen, and we were finally going to conduct the ultrasound today.
“Are you nervous?” I asked Belladonna as I drove us to the hospital.
She scoffed, munching on a snack.
Her morning sickness has reduced as the weeks have gone by, and now she can manage to stomach a little food.
“Says you,” she said. “You’ve been fidgeting since we woke up.”
“It’s natural to be nervous when you’re about to know your child’s gender,” I defended.

She chuckled softly, leaning in and placing a soft kiss on my cheek. “Look at you pouting.” I gave her a look before I looked back at the road. “I don’t care really much about gender, mi amor. Because whatever the gender, I’m going to love them more than I love myself.”
My chest grew tight, and I looked over at her to see that she was looking out the window with a small, beautiful smile on her
face.
She was the one who was nervous when she found out she was pregnant, saying she might not be a good mother, but look at her now, saying those things so naturally with a smile.
“You’re glowing,” I whispered, still looking at her, but unfortunately I had to keep my eyes on the road, so I looked away.
“Right?!” she expressed, and I knew she was beaming. “I looked into the mirror this morning and I was wowed. My skin’s glowing, my hair is darker and even healthier!”
I held her hand, placing a soft kiss on it. “That is exactly what you deserve; glowing while carrying our baby. I hope they look like you.”
She squeezed my hand. “Nah, I want them to look like you. At least your eyes.”
“Why? I love your eyes.”
“What’s there to love about it? It’s just mere black.”
“And that is why I love it. It looks like the ocean at night when the moon reflects on it.”
“Oh, you.” She leaned forward, kissing me on the lips and blocking my vision.
“Hey, I’m driving!”
“Yes, and you’re a good driver, so we’re safe.”
“You don’t look nervous at all,” the doctor said to Belladonna as she got her ready for the scan.
Belladonna gave me a teasing look, her eyebrows wiggling. “Yes, that one there is the one who’s nervous,”
I fought the urge to roll my eyes and I also forced myself to relax.

The doctor spread the cool gel across Belladonna’s lower belly Her lamp was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, and anything I see it bare like this, something in my chest loosens
“It’s cold Belladonna complained, and the doctor laughed softly as die picked up the transducer and began moving in slow motion
The screen behind us thickered to life, first showing black and gray swirls, then a shape, faint for unmistakable
The steady, rhythmic sound of a heartbeat filled the room, fast and strong
“There’s your baby, the doctor said softly, her tone warm. “Nineteen weeks along and growing beautifully
Belladonna’s hand found my shaking one and she squeezed tightly, her eyes fixed on the screen It felt like I couldn’t breathe as I watched the tiny shape on the screen
“That’s our child,” Belladonna choked out, her voice thick with tears. That’s our child. Kade
I could say nothing. I couldn’t even breathe. I just stared and stared, speechless
The doctor moved the probe again, tracing lines “The head looks perfect Spine’s straight. You can see the little arms and legs here” She pointed, and Belladonna let out a tiny laugh.
I was still speechless, my throat tight.
The doctor turned to us, smiling warmly “Now would you like to know the gender?”
Belladonna turned to me with teary eyes, nodding. I nodded back, swallowing to push the lump down my throat.
She pressed lightly on one side of Belladonna’s belly, and on the screen, the baby turned, just a little
“There we go,” the doctor muttered. Then she turned to us, her smile wide. “Congratulations. It looks like a girl”
For a moment, there was only silence, just the hum of the machine, and the echo of that tiny heartbeat.
A girl.” I finally managed to speak, my voice shaking. “Our little girl.”
Belladonna exhaled a shaky laugh, tears flowing down her cheeks. “She’s so tiny!”
I bent down, pressing a kiss to her forehead, my hand tight on hers.
“Our little girl,” I whispered again as I kissed her tears.
The doctor printed the ultrasound image and handed it to us. “Congratulations, you two. She’s perfect”
We took the picture from her, thanking her. After she was gone, we both stared at the grey picture for long minutes, silent.
“She’s beautiful,” Belladonna whispered, and I kissed her since all words have failed me once again.
She was beautiful, both of them were.
We were complete now; a family.
I was going to do everything within my power to protect and love both of them.
They were both my life, my purpose.

The day our daughter was born, I cried.
It was in the dead of the night when Belladonna suddenly woke up with a sharp cry.
“Kade!” she screamed, grabbing my hand. “Kade, my water broke!”
I was immediately on my feet, grabbing the bag we had already prepared for this situation.
“Come on,” I said as I carried her, trying to keep my cool. I couldn’t panic. Not now. Tve got you.”
I drove as fast as I could to the hospital, my hands shaking. When we got to the hospital, I didn’t want to let her go, I wanted to stay with her.
“I’ll be fine,” she said as she was carried to the emergency room, and even though she was in pain, she was still smiling. “Both of us will be fine.”
“I love you,” I said, my voice rough. “Come back to me fine.”
After she started labour, I called her father, Gianna, and even my brothers.
One hour passed, and her screams filled my ears.
Two hours, and the scream got even louder.
Her father and Gianna arrived, both of them joining me in the pacing. None of us could even reassure each other, because we were all worried out of our damn minds.
Three hours, and I felt like I was going crazy.
Four hours and one of the nurses rushed out, with blood on her hands. “Mr. Varkas, Mrs. Varkas is asking for you.”
