My eyes widened. “Y–you can smell my fear?”
He looked amused. “You don’t know your own kind even when one of them is standing in front of you?”
That got my attention and I unfolded my legs slowly, leaning forward, but I didn’t go too far.
‘My kind? You’re also a werewolf?” He nodded, still looking amused. “I–I have never come across my kind for years. Ever ince I was taken away from my people, I have never seen one like me before. I thought there weren’t any in this country.”
His face suddenly darkened, and I flinched back.
I could hear Amelia’s voice in my head, scolding, “Stupid, stupid girl. Don’t you ever learn? This is their method. They make you feel safe so you can lower your guard and then they strike.”
Could I survive in this world without Amelia? I wasn’t naïve–no, years in that place will take that away from you–but I was easily swayed.
I was preparing to be hit when he asked, “You were taken?”
That startled me and I just blinked at him for a while. “S–sir?”
“You said you were taken from your people,” he said again, and this time I could tell he was trying to soften his voice. Who was this man? “When? Why? What for?”
