I haven’t slept a wink since yesterday, and for this past month, I barely even slept. My body was beginning to feel the lack of sleep. If I were a human, my body would have shut down ages ago and forced me to sleep, but since I wasn’t human, I would continue to push this body of mine until it reaches its limit.
Gianna gave the names of the rats she was suspecting, which aligned with my own list. So I was going to pay those men a little visit.
I left my office with nothing on me but a tiny recorder that wasn’t noticeable, going down to the fourth floor to visit the first bastard. If things went well, I wouldn’t have to visit the other men and we could put an end to this mess earlier than planned.
I stepped into the fourth floor and it was just as busy and chaotic as all the other floors, the only difference was the eyes that followed me as I walked to the front desk.
“Hello,” I said to the secretary at the desk, and she stood straight, looking a little nervous.
‘M–Mr. Varkas.”
Being Belladonna’s husband meant I didn’t need to introduce myself anywhere I went in this office. It also gave me a bit of authority.
‘Mr. Conti,” I stated. “Is he in?”
She nodded. “Yes, sir.”
Tell him Mr. Varkas’s here.”
She immediately dialed a number on her telephone, pressing it to her ear as if she wanted to melt into it.
“Mr. Conti,” she said when he picked. “Mr. Varkas is here to see you.” A pause. She swallowed, a bead of sweat dripping down her forehead. She raised her eyes to me, a strained smile on her face. “What is your purpose for visiting, sir?”
“Tell him it’s a dire matter that’s for his ears only.”
She nodded and repeated the message. She dropped the telephone, pointing towards his office. “Mr. Conti will see you.”
I nodded my thanks and moved to the office, knocking softly and his voice ushered me in.
I entered his office, and he rose as I moved to him.
“Mr. Varkas,” he greeted as he shook my hand. “To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Nothing much,” I answered as I sat, my voice cool, my eyes trained on his face. “I just came to discuss the mess our company’s in.”
He shifted in his seat. “Oh, I see.”
“What are you gaining from helping Medea?” There was no need to beat around the bush, just hit the nail on the head and get
this over with.
“What do you mean?” he asked, trying to play cool but his voice shook.

“Let’s not play that game, Mr. Conti. I’ll give it to you straight; we already know those involved. All four of you, Medea included.” His eyes widened and a smile twitched my lips. Damn, this was easier than I thought it would be. “You know what I mean now, don’t you?”
“It was Medea,” he burst, leaning forward, sweat beading on his eyebrows. “She… she tricked us!”
This was really easier than I anticipated.
I also learned forward, folding my hands and placing them on the desk. “How?”
He sang for me. “She told us Belladonna wasn’t capable enough to take over this company. She said Belladonna was just a brat and would ruin this company. She claimed the company should be in older hands. And you know… we want what’s best for this company and that’s why we did what we did.”
He stopped and I raised an eyebrow. “That can’t be all, Mr. Conti. What did she promise you? A huge promotion?”
He licked his lips before he nodded, and I nodded as well. “Of course. We all want to be at the top of the food chain after all.” I stared at him, tapping my fingers on the desk. “Let’s make a deal, Mr. Conti. A deal that’ll stay between us. Give me the names of those involved and what role Medea played. Don’t hold back. And I guarantee that you won’t fall along with the others. I’ll put in a good word for you with Belladonna.”
His eyes grew wide with greed. “R–really?”
Foolish, old man.
I nodded. “Yes. I’m a man of my word.”
He told me everything; the names, where they had held the meetings, and how they had hacked into the system and forged Belladonna’s signature. He told me everything from A to Z, and it turns out that there were more than four rats inside the company that had a hand in this. They were people in different departments involved.
But there was one thing he didn’t say.
“What about the weapons?” I asked. “Where are they?”
He shook his head. “Medea is the only one who knows their whereabouts.”
Of course. Medea was a very wise woman.
“Thank you for your time, Mr. Conti,” I said, reaching out and shaking his hand. “You’ll hear from me soon”
“Please stay true to your word,” he said eagerly as he shook my hand with his sweaty palm and I wanted to rip my hand away
But I maintained my cool as I nodded. “I will.”
I left the office, dialing Gianna’s number.
“I got the full confession,” I said as soon as she picked up, and there was a long pause on her line.
“So soon?” she asked.
“Yes. I will send the record to you.”
“And I’ll send it to my prosecutor friend. She’ll get a search warrant in less than a day.”
“Good.”

As soon as I ended the call, another call came in. It was Belladonna’s father.
“Mr. Iannelli.”
“Kade, Medea has agreed to tell us where the weapons are.”
I paused in my steps, the phone pressed to my ear. “She has?”
“Yes. It wasn’t easy getting her to admit it, and even then, she has a condition.”

“A condition?” I growled, my hand tightening on my phone until I heard a crack. “What makes her think she can set a condition in this situation?”
He sighed, deep and heavy. “It’s all my fault, Kade. I’ve allowed her to think she can do as she wants for so long. This is a result of my foolishness.”
I released a breath, walking to the elevator. “What is her condition?”
“She wants to see you.”
I frowned. “That’s it?”
“You shouldn’t take what Medea says or do so lightly, Kade.”
“I know what she wants, but she’s never getting it.”
“Good. So seeing her shouldn’t be a problem.”
“It wouldn’t. Where does she want to meet?”
“At a bar/hotel.”
That fucking woman.
That made my ears ring with rage, and my mouth moved before I could stop it. “How could you be comfortable with this, Mr. Iannelli? How could you let her act that way?”
“Kade, there are a lot of things loneliness and grief will make you do. I hope you never come to experience.”
I pressed my fingers to my temple. “I’m sorry, that was out of line.”
“No need to apologize. I get where your frustration is coming from.”
I nodded to myself. “Please send me the location.”
