Chapter 4
Lynne and Hyman’s eyes lit up.
They shared the same thought.”Mom was gone. Auntie Sharon could move in now!
“Mom wouldn’t be around to nag us anymore or grill the doctor about our exercise routines.”
Concetta always made a big deal out of everything.
She insisted they do a set amount of exercise every month and always monitored them.
“Too bad, though. Mom promised last time she’d help us build that spaceship model. It’s super hard,” Hyman said, looking dejected.
It was a model with thousands of pieces that would become a magnificent spaceship when finished. He wanted to build it and give it to Sharon for her birthday.
But it was complicated work that strained his eyes and energy.
He’d been counting on Concetta to do it.
Lynne was also a little upset.”Mom should have finished sewing my doll’s clothes before she left.”
Every time Concetta went back, she made lots of clothes for the dolls. Sharon always praised how well Lynne dressed them.
But this time, Concetta left too quickly. Her doll clothes weren’t ready.
Sharon wouldn’t see them and praise her.
“Mom isn’t as good as Auntie Sharon, but she’s good at those tedious tasks,” Lynne thought.
In Miami, thousands of miles away.
Concetta returned to the apartment she shared with Alejandro.
After Alejandro moved back to San Jose with the children, Concetta stayed in Miami.
Besides work, her main purpose was caring for Alejandro’s parents.
While Samuel Calderon, Alejandro’s father, resided long-term in San Jose, the rest of the Calderon family had moved to Miami ten years earlier.
The strict traditions of wealthy families in San Jose demanded exacting standards for everything.
Kristy Wilson, Alejandro’s mother, didn’t get along with Samuel. Used to a life of ease, she refused to return to San Jose. She led a satisfactory life in Miami.
The Calderon family disapproved of women taking prominent public roles or being too ambitious.
So, Concetta had stayed in Miami for Alejandro’s sake, caring for his parents.
Her position at the Calderon Group was just a formality.
But now, she had decided to divorce Alejandro. The Calderon family’s affairs were no longer her concern.
Concetta packed all her belongings from the apartment. Then, she prepared to hand the keys over to Alejandro’s butler.
Coincidentally, the butler saw her coming downstairs. “Mrs. Calderon, you’re back. Madam Calderon mentioned she’d like some of that chili con carne you made last time…”
He stopped short when he saw her suitcase.
Concetta handed the key to the butler.
“I won’t be living here anymore.” She offered a faint smile. “As for chili con carne, you’ll need to hire a professional chef to make it.”
Ignoring the butler’s stunned expression, Concetta turned and left.
That day, Kristy did not get her chili con carne.

That evening.
Alejandro video-called his mother.

Kristy couldn’t help complaining.”Honestly, I always said you shouldn’t have married a woman from Miami. She doesn’t even know how to make a simple chili con carne properly.”
Alejandro was a bit surprised.

No matter what happened before, Concetta had always been respectful and obedient to her elders.
This time, her temper was unexpectedly strong.
“It’s just a dish. If she can’t make it, have a chef do it.”
Kristy sounded a bit embarrassed.
She had tried several chefs, but none matched Concetta’s skill.
Still, she couldn’t admit that to her son and mumbled vaguely in response.
The butler, who had come in to deliver something, hesitated. He wondered if he should tell Alejandro that Concetta had moved
out.
“Mr. Calderon, Mrs. Calderon, she…”
Before he could finish, Alejandro cut him off calmly.”Her affairs don’t concern me. Handle it as you see fit.”
The butler’s words died in his throat.
