Chapter 5

The next second, Alejandro had already hung up.

Gazing out the penthouse window, a flicker of faint displeasure crossed his exceptionally handsome face.

He looked at his newly replaced phone but didn’t dial the number at the top of his list.

Last time at the church, his phone and SIM card had been destroyed.

He had intended to inform Concetta about it.

She was, after all, his wife.

However, years of being treated so well seem to have made her a bit headstrong.

Alejandro intended to teach her a lesson.

Concetta had no idea about this.

After a peaceful night’s sleep, she returned to the Calderon Group and submitted her resignation.

The resignation process went smoothly.

When Alejandro had given her the nominal position years ago, it was only a minor role. The entire company was unaware of her true identity.

Therefore, once her handover was complete, she was free to leave.

Upon hearing she resigned, a colleague couldn’t help remarking, “Is it because of your two kids? At four or five years old, they need constant care, so clingy. You dote on them like treasures. You always had their photos on your desk, even their pictures on your necklace.”

Concetta paused.

She had loved Alejandro deeply, and naturally, she loved the two children they shared.

Even separated by miles, she had always cared deeply about Lynne and Hyman.

But…

She shook her head and smiled faintly.”It has nothing to do with them.”

Concetta meant it.

While the Calderon Group was a large, multinational company, it dealt in construction materials and real estate, fields unsuitable

for her.

As Alejandro’s wife, constrained by the Calderon family, she had never seriously considered her career.

But now that she had chosen to divorce Alejandro, it was time to rebuild her own life.

Concetta glanced down at her phone as a Neo-Tradition Gala ad flashed by,”Aroma Fusion.”

Perfumery, tea ceremonies, and retro style…

A spark of interest ignited within her.

Shortly after, she texted her cousin, Burt McFarland, “Can you get me a ticket for this?”

Burt replied quickly, “No problem. But haven’t you been super busy? Busy looking after the Calderon family and your kids. Do you even have time?”

“Yes, I got a divorce,” Concetta replied calmly after a moment’s thought.

Burt was stunned.

“Really?” Burt gasped. “That’s the Calderon family!”

The Calderon family was powerful enough to build a private outdoor playground for their grandchildren on San Jose’s incredibly

expensive land.

Putting that aside…

When Concetta’s parents died, if her grandfather hadn’t done the Calderon family a great favor, they would never have pressured Alejandro to marry the daughter of a university professor, even if her grandfather was the renowned master of traditional painting, Hiram McFarland.

“I was not happy in this marriage.” Concetta smiled.

Burt sighed, torn between regret and understanding.”But can you really bear to leave Lynne and Hyman?”

Concetta glanced at her phone.

After the children moved back to San Jose, she had given them phones, afraid they might cry for her.

Yet, over the past year, unless she called them first, the children had never called her.

They had an immensely powerful family and a “mother” they preferred… Why should Concetta cling so desperately to mere blood

ties?
