Chapter 8
Now he sat on the couch, looking at the furniture that had seen better days, remembering when I’d first bought it and sat right here, patting the cushions to
invite him over.
“Jasper, come here, come here! I’ve had my eye on this one forever-I kept Imagining us cuddled up on this couch watching movies!”
A bitter smile twisted his lips.
The person who used to stay up late watching movies with him was gone, but he seemed to realize only now that what he’d thought was family love was still romantic love-it had just evolved into an essential seed in his life that had grown into a towering tree.
“Vera.”
He whispered and walked toward the bedroom, looking at our wedding photo with half of it torn away-his smiling face next to empty space.
Leaning against the closet, his hand suddenly touched something.
He turned to see a pair of dried lace panties, and something in his brain just exploded.
nstinctively, he opened the closet and saw various sexy lingerie and sleepwear that Lila had left there, plus a USB drive.
le couldn’t believe it as he turned on his computer and plugged in the drive, only to see footage of me standing in a dark corner, witnessing him protecting Lila, eing her knight, witnessing Emma shouting:
I’m going in there to tear that bitch apart.”
But I stopped her.
told Emma: “I want to give Jasper one more chance.”
ears fell from my eyes as I told her: “I promised Jasper that no matter what happened, I’d trust him.”.
ly voice was shaking, my expression betraying my lack of confidence.
[aybe I was really hoping he’d answer that phone call.
[aybe in that moment, I was still gambling-gambling on which way his scales would tip.
isper’s hands trembled as he watched the surveillance footage, seeing himself let Lila hang up my call before saying with complete indulgence:
Okay, I’ll spend today with you.”
e watched me nearly collapse, steadied firmly by Emma, looking up at the camera with red eyes: “The surveillance!”
Save the surveillance!”
Watching me and Emma leave the camera’s view nearly broke his heart. With trembling hands, he clicked on the next segment-the hospital, with Marcus
lling me:
Vera.”
Did you and Jasper have some kind of falling out?”
[e suddenly remembered that hospital had quite a few of my acquaintances.
ly dream had once been to study medicine, but because his family fell on hard times, because he was determined to start a business and make a comeback, I’d iven up my dream to follow him into finance.
low he watched Marcus glance at the surveillance camera, then tell me firmly: “It’s against protocol, but since my junior colleague rarely asks for help, I efinitely have to help.”
hen Marcus handed me the surveillance footage: “Why put yourself through this?”
People need to learn to look forward.”
My eyes were still red and swollen from crying as I told Marcus:
But I shouldn’t have to suffer these grievances without Jasper knowing about them.”
