Chapter 5 Moved
Chapter 5 Moved
I left after that day.
Jericho didn’t stop me.
I guess we both got the message.
I moved to Lunaris, and suddenly I had nothing to do.
It hit me then that saving for Jericho’s treatments was a thing of the
past.
I looked at my calloused hands, and my eyes welled up.

It was true; I no longer had to work myself to death for him.
Every day from now on, I could live for myself.
The realization left me a little dazed at first, but soon, I felt a wave of relief.
With the money I had left, I rented a clean apartment.
I opened the curtains and took a deep breath.
Sunlight filled the living room.
It was the first time in years that I’d felt this relaxed.
I wanted to start over.
But after a three–year hiatus, I felt lost.
Clutching my resume, I nervously went to an interview at an old, well–known company.
The HR staff reviewed it and politely turned me down.
Feeling a bit dejected, I started to leave.
I was walking out with my head down when I bumped into a guy in a suit at the door.
“Sorry! Sorry about that!”
“It’s okay… Wait, Selly?”
The man called out uncertainly, his tone tinged with surprise.
I glanced up. puzzled, and his face rang a bell.
His eyes were shining as he looked at me.
“Selly, I knew it was you!”
I frowned, digging through my memories, and then it hit me–he was Samuel Whitmore, the guy who sat next to me in high school.
He used to be skinnier and almost too pretty, which made him an easy target for being left out.
I was the only friend he had.
But after graduation, he went abroad, and we lost touch.
I didn’t expect to see him here, of all places.
Looking at him now, it felt like we belonged to completely different worlds.
Flustered, I waved at him and made a run for it.

But before I could get far, Samuel caught me by the wrist.
“You came for an interview, didn’t you?”
I nodded awkwardly.
“I can get you hired.”
His voice had lost that boyish tone from years ago; it was deeper and steadier now.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
He chuckled and reassured me. “Don’t worry. I own this company.”

Thanks to Samuel, I sort of “dropped in” at the company.
I’d wanted to turn him down, but I didn’t have enough money to last much longer.
He took care of me, setting me up with simple work, the kind of work interns usually handle.
I learned from colleagues younger than me while studying hard for my certifications.
It didn’t take long to realize that Samuel wasn’t the same Samuel I used to know.
Some coworkers gossiped that Samuel was ruthless at work, and most people were terrified of him.
Watching Samuel in the conference room, all serious and focused, I started to wonder.
His nose looked more defined than when we were teens, and his mouth was set in a tight, straight line.
He looked so distant, so cold.
Then my phone buzzed with a WhatsApp message.
“Ugh, starving. Don’t feel like sitting through this meeting.”
I couldn’t hold back a grin. Samuel hadn’t changed; he was still that gentle, caring boy I used to know.
I typed back, still smiling.
“Just hang on a little longer. Lunch is almost here!”
“I want a hamburger.”
“Seriously? The great CEO loves junk food? No way. Didn’t your stomach hurt the other day? My place is close. I made oatmeal this morning. I’ll bring some later.”
“No banana.”
I rolled my eyes. “Okay, but at least let me add some honey.”
Through the glass, I caught him sneaking a grin before shoving his phone back into his pocket, then putting on that serious face to scold his team.
For a moment, his silhouette overlapped with the Samuel I remembered from high school.
It almost felt like I hadn’t grown up.
Like I was still that carefree kid I used to be.
Maybe I still have time to turn my life around.
The days kept slipping by like that.
