Chapter 9 Pain
Chapter 9 Pain
I trembled as I glanced around. Moonlight slipped through the cracks, and I could hear the waves outside.
“Where’s Samuel?!” I yelled at him.
His face twisted with rage as he grabbed my face.
“The moment you wake up, you ask about that bastard. Do my feelings mean nothing to you?”
I didn’t bother answering him. I rolled off the bed, scrambling to run away.
He didn’t stop me.
The second I opened the door, the salty wind slammed into my face.
At the sea!
The ocean outside was so dark it looked ready to devour everything.
I dropped to the floor, exhausted, staring blankly.
“Jericho, what do you even want?”

He crouched beside me, tilting my face so I had no choice but to look at him. “Look at me. I want your eyes on me–only me.
“Stay away from that pretty boy!
“Relax, I’ll take you to a deserted island. Just the two of us. We’ll start fresh. When you finally change your mind, we’ll come back.”
I chuckled, my gaze drifting past him, empty and cold.
“Jericho, let me go. I don’t love you anymore.”
He grabbed my collar and jerked me toward him..
“What do you mean?! You swore we’d be together forever, that you only wanted me in this life! You even suffered for three years for me!
“Why did you change your mind? It’s because of that pretty boy, isn’t it?! Why won’t you look at me?!”
Before?
Before, I never hated you like this.
Jericho destroyed everything I had. Why was he suddenly pretending to be so pitiful?
Disgusting. Sickening. Repulsive.
The spot he touched started to itch again.
I scratched at my arms and neck like I could rip my own skin off, leaving it red and raw.
“Selly! What do I have to do to make you talk to me?! I gave up everything for you! Can’t you look at me, just one damn time?!”
Hah.
An abuser… begging for forgiveness? What a joke.
I finally looked at him, but whatever he saw in my eyes made him afraid.
“Want to know why?
For three years, I survived on barely three hours of sleep a night, grinding through five jobs just for you. I wouldn’t even 1/2

spend money on the cheapest meals–just plain bread and pickles–so I could save every penny for your medical bills.
“For that money, no matter how hard or humiliating the work was, I took it all. Even when people pushed me around, I clenched my teeth and endured it.
“Do you remember Billy, the one you arranged for me? He not only tried to rape me, but he even stole a month’s worth of my hard–earned pay! You knew about this, didn’t you?”
He shook his head in shock. “No, I didn’t know. Talia told me it was just a little—”
I chuckled. Talia again. Of course. Did Talia also tell you she sent those disgusting customers to my bar to cause trouble? Because I turned them down, they beat me so badly I couldn’t get out of bed for two weeks.
“I can still hear the sound of my bones breaking that day. Crack. Crack. One by one. Jericho, I was in so much pain… all my ribs were broken. Do you even know that I almost didn’t survive?
“And where were you? With Talia? Or laughing at me behind my back?
When they threw that money in my face, I wanted to refuse it, but all I could think of was you lying in that hospital bed. So I swallowed every bit of that humiliation.
“You’ll never know my three years of suffering. You’ll just blame me from your moral high ground, never understanding your supposed good intentions.
“You’re too selfish to ever understand.
“The Selly who adored you is utterly destroyed by you.”
Jericho’s expression slowly crumbled.
“I didn’t know any of this! Selly, forgive me! I really didn’t! This was all Talia’s doing! I didn’t know you were suffering so much…”
He collapsed to his knees, covering his face like the pain was too much to bear.
So you did know what pain felt like, Jericho?
I smirked.
While he was still in shock, I rushed out the door.
