Chapter 6 Threaten Her
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” stammered Emily, her eyes darting around nervously as she took two steps back.
“You know full well whether you drugged someone or not! You just didn’t expect the tables to turn on you, did you? Or maybe you didn’t think I’d witness your affair firsthand. What do you think will happen if Uncle Dylan finds out?”
Clara held up the photos she had found, displaying them in front of Emily.
The scandalous scene made Emily attempt to snatch the phone, but Clara deftly evaded her.
Now Emily understood that Clara had long since uncovered her scheme of drugging someone, and she had even been outmaneuvered!
Our marriage will crumble if Dylan finds out. I might even be kicked out of the Bennett Family.
“What do you want?” Emily’s tone softened significantly.
“Where is Emma?” Clara’s eyes suddenly turned sharp.
“I don’t know. She hasn’t come back.”
Clara scrutinized Emily, who didn’t seem to be lying, and she indeed hadn’t found Emma earlier. “Return the fund to me, and I won’t tell Uncle Dylan about this.”
Seeing the surprise in Emily’s eyes, Clara sneered, “Surprised?”
Sooner or later, I will reclaim everything that belongs to me. Those responsible for my parents’ car accident would pay dearly!
“I don’t manage the fund; I can’t get it right away.” Emily tried to find various excuses.
Clara’s lips curved as if she saw through her. “You manage everything in this household. I’ll say it again, give me the fund.”
All her patience vanished when she learned the truth about her parents’ death.
Emily felt a bit intimidated by the current Clara for some reason.
Her grandmother has just died, and she might become desperate and reckless. I can’t let Dylan know about my affair with another man.
After much deliberation, Emily agreed. “Fine, I agree.”
Seeing that Clara didn’t leave, she asked, “Is there anything else?”
“Yes, I want to have my grandmother’s funeral at Bennett Residence.”
Given the special circumstances, she couldn’t take her grandmother back to the countryside for the funeral. Her grandmother had always worked hard, and she wanted her to have a dignified departure.
In her current situation, she couldn’t hold the funeral at Michael’s place.
“Impossible!” Emily immediately refused without a second thought. “To have a wake service and holding a funeral at Bennett Residence is out of the question. Our deal is done. You can forget about the fund if you continue to threaten me with those photos!”
Since Clara already knew about the fund, it was obviously important to her. Emily would not relent further.
“How about a new deal?” Clara smirked. “I think you should know some things about your daughter. Even if you don’t know every detail, you can probably guess. Emma is pregnant, and out of wedlock.”
“You’re talking nonsense! Don’t slander my daughter!”
Although Emily sounded confident, she wasn’t entirely sure, and her brows furrowed tightly.
Occasionally, she overheard Emma talking to a man on the phone in a somewhat intimate manner, but pregnant…
Clara noticed Emily’s thoughts. “You can go to the hospital and check with the gynecology department to check for records of Emma’s pregnancy if you don’t believe me.”
Doctors kept records of every patient they saw and there would be documentation on the computer.
Emily panicked seeing that Clara’s statements were logical and evidence-based.
“What if the media reports the daughter of the Bennett Family is pregnant out of wedlock, and no one even knows who the father is? The Bennett Family’s business is already struggling; don’t you think it would only get worse with such a scandal?”
Every word Clara said hit the mark, forcing Emily to consider the implications.
Holding a funeral for Clara’s grandmother is a minor issue. How can I secure Emma a good husband in the future if her situation becomes public knowledge?
“Fine, I agree!” Gritting her teeth, Emily agreed.
Michael arrived sitting in his wheelchair, pushed by Eric, and happened to hear Emily’s agreement.
“Why are you here?” Clara glanced at Michael out of the corner of her eye and noticed his assistant.
She frowned slightly while she met Eric’s gaze.
Isn’t this the man I saw at the hospital? He’s with Emma. Why is Michael involved with Emma?
“Mr. Goodman, what brings you here?” Emily quickly composed herself, smiling as she greeted him. “Come on in.”
“No need. I’m here to pick up Clara.” Michael observed the atmosphere between them, realizing Clara had handled the situation herself. “Is everything settled?”
Clara hesitated, unsure of his intentions, but nodded. “Yes.”
Is he worried about me? Maybe Eric, Michael’s assistant, has notified him. Why is this man so concerned about me?
Clara’s phone rang at that moment. She quickly answered, seeing it was from the hospital.
“Miss Bennett, your grandmother is still in the hospital. When will you come to pick her up? Should we move her to the morgue?”
“I’ll be there right away!” Clara said urgently, then turned to leave but paused to give Emily a cold look. “Don’t forget what you promised!”
It was hard to get a cab at Bennett Residence, but suddenly, a voice came from behind. “I’ll take you there.”
Michael guessed it was a call from the hospital.
Clara didn’t stand on ceremony, got in the car, and Michael stood up from his wheelchair and sat beside her.
“Your leg…”
He had just been in a wheelchair, but now he’s up?
“I always use the wheelchair in public.” Then, he instructed his assistant, “Go to the hospital.”
Clara was in a bad mood the entire way and didn’t speak to him.
They soon arrived at the hospital, and she rushed out of the car.
In the hospital room, she saw her grandmother had been prepared by the staff, covered with a white cloth.
She lost control of her emotions and cried uncontrollably.
“Thank you for bringing me here. I want to be alone with my grandmother,” said Clara, eyes fixed on the bed as she walked over.
Michael left with a signal to his assistant knowing she needed her space.
“Arrange a time for me to see Jade,” said Michael once they left the room.
“You know full well whether you drugged someone or not! You just didn’t expect the tables to turn on you, did you? Or maybe you didn’t think I’d witness your affair firsthand. What do you think will happen if Uncle Dylan finds out?”
