Chapter6
Only then did Alexander Stone’s icy gaze land on Grace Miller–and flick past her to the refined men standing behind her. His expression darkened to something lethal.
“Grace,” he warned, voice low and cold, “I told you to stay away from Bella. What is this? You weren’t enough on your own, so you brought friends to seduce her?”
Grace could not believe her ears.
Seduce?
“Are you blind, Alexander? Bella Hart was the one harassing my friends!”
He looked ready to snap back, but Bella, furious that he hadn’t soothed her first, stomped her foot
and whirled for the door.
“Bella” Alexander lunged after her,his tone shifting instantly into anxious pleading. “Okay,
okay, don’t be mad. It’s my fault. From now on I won’t meet with any female clients alone, right? Hmm?”
Even as he chased her, he barked an order over his shoulder to the guards. “Whichever hand
touched Miss Hart–break it.”
He didn’t look back. He just ran after Bella.
The bodyguards closed in at once.

Grace threw herself in front of her friends, voice like a whip. “Don‘ t you dare. Open your eyes- who put their hands on whom? Bella harassed them first. They‘ re my friends, and their families
carry real weight in Northbridge. Try laying a finger on them and see what happens.”
The leader didn’t blink. “Miss Miller, don’t make this harder. Your friends‘ backgrounds are respectable, but in front of Mr. Stone, they mean little‘. One word from him and their families go bankrupt. I have to give Mr. Stone an explanation.”
Ice flooded Grace‘ s veins. Rage and helplessness threatened to drown her. The worst part was
knowing he was right. For the first time, she hated that she had married Alexander Stone–she had
endured the humiliation herself, and now her best friends were dragged into it.
She drew a long breath, forced her emotions down, and lifted her chin. “Fine. I’ll give you an explanation.”

She seized a decorative metal rod from the wall. Before anyone could stop her, in a collective gasp of horror, she brought it down hard on her own left wrist.
A crisp crack split the room. Pain exploded up her arm. Her hand dropped, useless.
“Grace!” her friends shouted, surging forward to catch her.
White–faced and drenched in cold sweat, Grace still managed to glare at the guards. “There. Now you can report back. I took the hit–for them.”
The head guard looked at her for a long beat, something complicated flickering in his eyes. He said nothing, turned, and left.
“You‘ re out of your mind,” her friends choked, supporting her. “We could’ve fought them!”
“We wouldn’t have won…” Grace whispered, lips trembling with pain. “It’s all right. A hand… can
be set.”
Panic–stricken, they half–carried her toward the exit, intent on getting her to a hospital.
They had just stepped outside when shouting erupted from the second–floor balcony.
Grace glanced up on instinct and saw Bella Hart teetering on the railing, swaying dangerously.
“Don’t come closer! I haven‘ t forgiven you!” Bella cried through tears. “One more step and I’ll
jump!”
A few paces away, Alexander’s always–composed face had twisted into shock and fear. “Bella! Don‘
t do anything stupid. Come down. Whatever you want me to do I’ll do it.”
“Anything?” she hiccuped.
“Anything. Even if it costs me my life.”
From below, Grace listened, a laughless breath catching in her throat. The absurdity of it. The chill.
How much did he love her to accept even this?
By then, Alexander’s coaxing seemed to work. Bella inched down from the ledge–then her foot
slipped.
“Aah-!”
Gasps ripped through the crowd as Bella plunged from the second floor-

-straight toward the doorway where Grace had just emerged.
Thud!
The impact slammed Grace to the ground, the force blinding her with pain as her body became a
human cushion.
Alexander tore downstairs like a madman. The moment he saw the scene, he didn’t hesitate. He
scooped a stunned Bella into his arms, voice shaking.
“Bella! Bella, are you okay? Don’t be afraid–I’m taking you to the hospital right now.”
Clutching Bella, he sprinted for the car.
From beginning to end, he never spared a single glance at Grace Miller–crushed beneath the woman he loved, lying motionless on the pavement, alive or dead, he did not care.
