Sleep fades slowly, dragging me back into wakefulness.
The first sensation is strange: a light, warm touch resting on my body, slow like fingers exploring skin.

I sit at the edge of the bed, feet touching the cold floor. Elbows rest on my knees as I stare at him.

He stays silent, tense from neck to heel.

The question makes him flinch. His gaze drops to the floor, seeking refuge in the rust. His reply comes small and rough.
“I… I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
A dry laugh escapes me, humorless.
“Wrong place, wrong time.” I repeat, shaking my head. “Coward’s excuse. No one ends up here by accident. If you’re in prison, someone wanted it that way. Or you screwed up bad.”
I stand and walk slowly toward where he kneels. My shadow covers him, making him seem even smaller. I crouch and lift his chin with two fingers, forcing him to face me.
“You really think that little story convinces me?” My voice is quiet, firm. No one comes to Blackthorn by chance. Not even the weak.”
He tries to hold my gaze, but his ragged breath betrays him.
“You look clever, angel. But don’t fool yourself – I can smell a lie from a mile away.”
I lean in, my voice brushing his ear, too low to sound gentle.

I straighten, return to the bed, and watch him remain on the floor.
The sight entertains me.

I cross my arms, still watching him in silence.

Adrian opens his mouth, but nothing comes out, only the air stuck in his throat. His hands tremble even more, exposed to the bitter cold of the
mountain.
I laugh softly, a low sound that echoes through the cell.
“Ah, you hurt me, Adrian.” The name weighs heavily. “Maybe it’s the beard. I haven’t trimmed it in a while; I’ve been too busy crushing idiots to waste time with razors. But if it’s for your sake, I’ll shave it off.”
The despair in his eyes feeds me; it’s like seeing a rope about to snap.
I smile maliciously, advancing slowly, measured steps.
The distance disappears until I corner him. He stands face to face with me: I observe his dark skin closely, the cold sweat running down his temple. I hold the back of his neck firmly.
