How can I be stuck in this place, breathing the same alt at them?
Anger rises like a heat I can’t cool.
There’s no room for anything but hate.
If I could, I’d tear this prison’s mask off and burn every bastard who upholds it.
A guard leaning by a stack of sacks watches it all, motionless. An indifferent face in the sea of eyes that have chased me for days.
I need someone outside that cell–a protection that doesn’t answer to the Executioner. In here, even the smallest scrap of safety is worth gold.
I don’t want much: just distance and time.
I approach slowly, with no plan for what I’ll say.
“Please.” My voice cracks; my body trembles. “I can’t take it anymore. They won’t leave me alone.”
His tired look is almost bored, no surprise, no interest.
I push, letting tears fall, my voice shaking louder.
“I just want protection. My father–he’s a tycoon. He can pay. Have the director call him; pay whatever it takes. Just… keep me away from
everyone.”
A malicious smile begins to curl at the corner of the guard’s mouth. He crosses his arms and steps closer, and the smell of old sweat and coffee
hits me.
“How much can your father pay?” he asks in a low voice.
Blood floods hot to my face.
I can’t hesitate.
“Whatever you want. My father is rich. He couldn’t keep me out of prison, but if the warden calls him, he’ll pay anything to anyone who helps me. I just need time and distance.”
Tears fall; sobs escape. The guard watches me for a few seconds, eyes narrowing as he measures the value of my promise.
“All right.” A small smile appears at the corner of his mouth. “I’ll talk to the warden. If it’s true, you’ll have a loyal dog at your side. But understand: favors come at a price.”
I turn my face and meet his gaze with fear and false gratitude, as if this were help I don’t deserve. He walks away quickly toward the warden’s office. I stay where I am, arms heavy. I wipe my tears with the back of my hand and take a deep breath. A raw, almost childlike relief floods me.
