Chapter 158
“For what?” David cuts.

“Because I can’t handle this alone. The guards aren’t enough. When he gets out of solitary, it’s going to come down on me. I need more people. nearby. That’s all.”
David lifts a hand to his chin, thinking for a few seconds–his heavy gaze on me, weighing whether it’s worth it. Finally, he exhales.
“There’s a group in the North Block yard. They don’t mix with Rocco; they watch everything. The leader’s name is Navarro. Not ideal company, but it’s what there is.”
“All right… thank you.” I try to sound relieved, although my heart is pounding like it’s going to explode.
“Go slow,” he warns. “They don’t trust rookies. Much less someone marked by him.”
“I understand.” I swallow hard, though I understand nothing.
I breathe deeply and head in the direction he indicated. The way to the North Block is a long corridor with narrow windows letting in pale
light. The yard opens up, covered in a thin crust of trampled snow.
Three men scrape the ice away with worn shovels; two others stand with arms crossed, watching. Their faces are hard; the rancor in the air is
palpable.
I take hesitant steps closer. The dry sound of shovels striking the ground echoes. One of them looks up, his hard eyes locking onto me.
“What the hell do you want here, Executioner’s toy?” His voice drips contempt.
My stomach flips. My hands fidget, fingers twisting together without my control. I force my throat to answer in a low tone.
“I’m not his toy,” my voice falters. “I need help.”
The man chuckles without humor and goes back to digging. Another, taller man crosses his arms and stares at me.
“Help? No one does charity here.”
“I just want to stay out of trouble.” I try to sound steady, but the tremor gives me away. “When the Executioner gets out of solitary, he’ll come
after me. I’ve nowhere to run.”
“And what’s that got to do with us?” The crossed–arms man snaps.
“If I stick around you guys…” I take a deep breath, controlling my anxiety…at least in the yard, in the mess hall, in line… Maybe he’ll keep his distance. Not just him–but the others too. I don’t want trouble. I just want to survive.”
Silence falls heavy. The sound of shovels returns until an older man drops his tool and approaches. His face is scarred; his voice is deep and
cold.
“Navarro.”
“Adrian,” I answer, tense.

Chapter 158
He measures me from head to toe. Even at five foot eleven, these men make me feel small.
“What exactly do you expect from us?”
- 5.

“I don’t just want proximity.” My voice shakes. “I need protection… not only from the Executioner, but from anyone who might try something with me.”
Navarro narrows his eyes.
“And what do we get out of it?”
My mouth goes dry; my hands won’t stop moving. I swallow the cold air before I speak.
“Money…” I say slowly. “And… drugs.”
Silence stretches. Some exchange looks; others snort, surprised.
“Drugs?” Navarro frowns. “And how the hell would you get that in here?”
“My father has friends in the police.” The words spill out fast but low. “They’re all corrupt. I’ve seen them smoking with him. If you want, he’ll
send whatever’s needed. He’ll pay double to have it brought in.”
One of the men whistles, impressed. Navarro keeps his composure, but now his attention is full.
“And the money?”
“My father pays upfront.” My voice wavers, but I push on. “David, the guard who’s helping me, already received part in the account. If you don’t believe me, ask him. He’ll confirm.”
