Chapter 2: You’ve Got Even Better at Seducing Men
Lily’s face lost its color in an instant, her eyes dimming.
Of course.
Three years of hell had taught her a lesson she wouldn’t forget.
She took a deep breath, trying to suppress the swirling emotions inside her, her fingers unconsciously clenching.
The car passed under a bridge, and the light flickered across Mateo’s face, casting it in shadows and then revealing it again.
Just like before, cold and distant.
Lily swallowed her bitterness. She couldn’t help herself. “Mateo… those people in prison, did you really bribe them?”
She had broken down countless times, even thought about ending it all.
But she couldn’t bring herself to leave Mateo. She was terrified that without her, he wouldn’t be alright.
She didn’t believe he could be so cruel to her.
But when their gazes met, Mateo’s voice was indifferent, “What kind of answer do you want to hear?”
Lily froze, then a bitter smile tugged at her lips.
Was this his way of admitting it?
In Mateo’s eyes, she was jealous of Eliza, so she had someone kidnap
As a result, Eliza almost be repeatedly violated.
But the evidence was damning, and Lily couldn’t argue her way out.
her.
If there was anyone to blame, it was Eliza for being so ruthless, daring to gamble her own innocence.
But she had won.
Lily suddenly felt how ridiculous her love was, love that had lasted for seven years.
Her gaze hollowed out as the car stopped in front of the house she had once shared with Mateo.
Every inch of the house had been personally chosen by Lily. From the materials used for the renovation, to the placement of the potted plants, to even the painting of the walls, she had been hands–on.
She had fantasized about living here with Mateo for countless nights.
But now, everything in the house belonged to Eliza.
She felt a sharp pain pierce through her chest. Her lips turned white as she bit down, realizing how much it hurt. It felt like a knife to the soul.
Mateo didn’t notice the woman’s pain behind him. He spoke to the servant who had come to greet them. “She’s too dirty. Take her to wash up first.”
The servant nodded, leading Lily to the bathroom.
Once inside, the servant pinched her nose, unsure of where to start.

Finally, unable to hold back, she said with distaste, “Miss, when was the last time you took a bath? How can you, a young lady, be so dirty?”
She was only 24. Didn’t she want to be clean?
Lily didn’t say a word. She let the servant leave and locked herself in the bathroom, washing for a full hour.
Her body had scars.
Three years of “special care” had left permanent marks. Even though they hadn’t touched her in the last month, the old wounds never truly healed.
Many of the wounds were in places hidden from others‘ eyes, deep purple and blue, layering one over the other.
There were marks from being pinched, scratched, kicked, and even slashed with sharp objects.
The prison had no medicine, and some of the wounds had festered and became infected. The worst was the long scar on her left foot.
It had been more than a year since it happened, and whenever it rained, it felt like a bone–deep pain. She probably wouldn’t ever get rid of it.
But it was fine. It would get better eventually.
Each time the pain became unbearable, Lily would comfort herself with those words.
The servant had prepared a change of clothes, which Lily put on in a daze. They fit surprisingly well.
But the moment she opened the door, she accidentally bumped into Mateo.
She couldn’t react fast enough, and her balance faltered, almost falling backward.
Mateo instinctively reached out, grabbing her waist.
His move was purely reflexive.
Lily froze for a moment, her chest hitting his.
The embrace caught both of them off guard.
Mateo smelled strongly of nicotine, and her fingers accidentally crumpled the shirt he was wearing.
As Lily realized what had happened, she hurriedly stepped back, away from him.
She distanced herself, saying coldly, “Sorry, Mr. Gates. I didn’t mean to.”
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw that he was holding a cigarette between his fingers, probably planning to go outside for a smoke when he passed by.
“What did you call me?”
Mateo’s eyes turned cold in an instant. His narrow eyes narrowed as he looked at her, his tone hard and biting. “Mr. Gates? Lily, what game are you playing now?”
Lily pressed her lips together and lowered her head. Her eyes quickly reddened.
It seemed that in front of someone who didn’t love her, everything she did was
wrong.
His touch still lingered on her, gentle and soft. A shadow passed across Mateo’s eyes as he placed the cigarette back in his mouth.
He wouldn’t admit it, but her sudden withdrawal from his embrace left a strange emptiness in him.
Especially now, seeing her eyes redden….The man’s inherent nature sparked an impulse in him to commit an offense against her.

Mateo lit the cigarette, his throat bobbing as he suppressed the stirring emotions. “I didn’t expect that after three years in prison, you’ve gotten better at seducing men.”
“What’s wrong? Can’t wait that much?” He smirked, his lips curling into a mocking smile.
