Chapter 22: No Room for Resistance

Chapter 22: No Room for Resistance

Lily took a cab back to the Foster family home

The front door was tightly shut. She rang the doorbell twice, and the housekeeper opened it just enough to stick her head out

When the housekeeper saw Lily, she was visibly surprised. Miss, you’re back?”

Lily gave a soft reply and walked inside

MissThe housekeeper hesitated, looking like she had something to say but couldn’t

Are you looking for Madam? She has a headache and is resting in her room. She said she doesn’t want to see anyone, the housekeeper added, her gaze full of pity

Who would have thought that the eldest daughter of the Foster family, who was once so proper, would end up in prison for three years

Just look at herskin and bones. Those three years in prison must have been tough on her

I’m not looking for her. Where are my things? Where did you put them?”

The housekeeper blinked, then quickly said, They’re in the storage room.”

Lily nodded and walked toward the storage room

All her belongings were piled up in a small box in the corner of the storage room

The box was covered in a thick layer of dust, which made Lily cough. She waved her hand to clear the dust and quickly found her ID card inside

She wasn’t planning to stay long. She closed the box and was about to leave

But as she turned, her eyes caught something in the corner of the box

There, neatly folded, was a men’s scarf

It was a gray knitted scarf, and perhaps because it had been kept for so long, it had lost its original shine

Lily felt dazed for a moment

She slowly crouched down and gently ran her hand over it. The warm, smooth texture still felt the same as it once hadcomforting and familiar

But her feelings had already changed

She picked up the scarf and draped it over her arm, planning to throw it away, tossing it into the trash outside. After all, it belonged to Mateo, and there was no reason to keep it anymore

Just like her feelings for himthere was no more attachment

But as she stepped out of the storage room, she bumped into Eliza, who was rushing back from outside, looking frantic

Eliza seemed to be running from somethingmaybe a ghost

She stumbled and fell to the ground, letting out a startled cry. When she saw that it was Lily standing before her, she froze

Why is it you? Why are you back?”

Lily glanced at her coldly. This is my home. Is it so strange that I came back?”

When Eliza saw the scarf in Lily’s hand, her expression suddenly stiffened

Of course, she knew that scarf belonged to Mateo. For the past ten years, Lily had kept it like a treasure, almost treating it as a precious possession

So, are you planning to take that to Mateo and apologize to him? Trying to win him back?”

Lily didn’t want to get entangled in this conversation. She spoke calmly, You’re overthinking. I have no such intention.”

You must have seen the news by now,Eliza said suddenly

The news about her and Mateo had probably already spread like wildfire

The paparazzi were hired by Eliza herself

Her plan was to use the intimate photos the paparazzi took to cry to Mateo, pretending that their affair would be exposed

Of course, it wasn’t really about exposing itjust a little act in front of him

Mateo, in order to suppress the public opinion, would probably go home and beg his mother to change the engagement to her

And his family would most likely stay silent, just to protect their reputation

After all, once this matter was exposed, the moral implications would put the Gates family in a difficult position

The negative impact would be much worse than marrying her

This was the only way Eliza could think of to marry Mateo

However, things didn’t go according to plan! Somehow, the paparazzi turned into television reporters

This morning, as she walked out of the hotel room, she was bombarded by dozens of cameras in her face. Eliza was stunned

It had escalated beyond control! It even made it to the morning news broadcastthere was no way to resolve it now

Now, everyone knew that she and Mateo had an affair, and that she had stolen her sister’s man

No one knew what the Gates family’s stance was, but apparently, Gates Corporation’s stock price had plummeted when the market opened this

morning

What could have been solved with a few intimate photos had now become a public spectacle Eliza was frustrated; her reputation was ruined

She regretted acting impulsively! And she was also furiouswho was the idiot that brought the reporters in

This had completely messed up her plans

Lily, you must have seen how Mateo protected me on camera, right? His heart is with me.”

Eliza quickly masked her troubled thoughts and looked at Lily with a mocking expression. Do you really think Mateo would care if you apologize

now?”

Lily didn’t want to waste any more time on her. Since you like picking men out of the trash, Mateo can be your prize. I’m not interested.”

She said this and moved past her, preparing to leave

Mentioning Mateo, Lily’s expression remained so calm, almost detached

Eliza froze, disbelief filling her face. You’re really not marrying Mateo anymore? Then what’s that scarf for? Are you going to go to him and try to win him back?”

Chapter 22: No Room for Resistance

Lily lowered her head, looking at the scarf in her hand. I’m planning to throw it away.”

With that, she casually tossed it into the nearby trash can

Eliza’s eyes widened in shock. She was about to say something when suddenly, a loud voice came from upstairs: Lily! What have you done to your sister? Why is she sitting on the floor?”

Wren rushed downstairs, furious when she saw Eliza sitting on the floor

Did you push your sister?”

She hurried over and helped Eliza up, turning to Lily with anger. What’s wrong with you? You come home and cause trouble right away? Are you trying to kill me with anger?”

Wren carefully checked Eliza, making sure she wasn’t injured, before letting out a sigh of relief

Lily felt calm inside. That night, she had already given up on family ties. I didn’t push her. If you don’t believe me, ask her.”

Wren looked at Eliza, who quickly said, Mom, I tripped and fell on my own.”

Wren paused, a little taken aback. Eliza, you don’t have to cover for Lily. If you’ve been wronged, just tell me.”

It really was my fault. I tripped,Eliza said quickly, then turned back to Lily. Lily, don’t blame mom. She didn’t know.”

Lily’s eyes narrowed slightly, and she couldn’t help but smirk

Mom, did you see the news this morning?Lily asked coldly

Hearing this, Eliza’s face instantly stiffened, and a flicker of guilt flashed in her eyes

As expected, as soon as Lily mentioned the news, Wren’s expression grew colder

In her mind, her usually obedient eldest daughter could never have done something so shameless and brought shame to their family

But the live broadcast was so detailedit gave her a headache all morning

Wren pursed her lips. Eliza, you and Mateo reallyC.

Eliza’s eyes turned red, and before she could speak, tears began to fall

Mom, I’m sorry. Mateo drank too much last night, and he took me to the hotel. I was too weak to resist.”

Part 1 – The Message That Shattered Everything

Aveline Russell’s peaceful evening ended the moment her phone buzzed.
One unread message changed her life: blurred photos of a hotel room, clothes scattered, a man’s familiar frame.
Her heart froze when she recognized the wrist—Jaxson Thorne, her mate of four years and Alpha of the Thornpeak Pack.
The date on the pictures was crueler still: it was their mating-anniversary night, the day he’d sworn they’d celebrate together.
He’d told her he was away on urgent pack business.
Now she understood the truth—his “urgent mission” had been an affair.

Part 2 – The Weight of Betrayal

For a long moment, Aveline couldn’t breathe.
Every memory—their first bond, his promises, his laugh—now felt like poison.
Her wolf spirit stirred in the back of her mind, restless and angry.
That instinct had always disliked Jaxson; she’d ignored it, blinded by love.
Now her wolf’s growl inside her head said what her heart refused to admit: He was never yours in truth.
Aveline exhaled sharply, tears drying into determination.
If Jaxson could betray her so easily, she would choose herself for the first time.

Part 3 – The Call of No Return

She opened her contacts and dialed a hidden number—the Bloodmoon Research Facility.
When the voice on the other end answered, she spoke calmly:

“I’ve decided to join.”
A stunned silence followed.
The official warned her what that meant: once inside the classified project, she would vanish from every record—no family, no pack, no past.
Her name, her life, her identity would all be erased.
“Are you ready to walk away from Alpha Jaxson?” the voice asked.
Aveline stared at a framed photo of them smiling together and whispered, “Yes. I’m ready.”
It was the first honest answer she’d given in years.

Part 4 – The Wolf Within

After the call, she sat in the dark, feeling her wolf awaken fully.
The beast within her—the same one Jaxson had mocked as too quiet, too gentle—rose with fierce pride.
It wanted revenge, but more than that, it wanted freedom.
For the first time, Aveline listened.
Her wolf’s steady heartbeat echoed through her veins, whispering that she was born for more than heartbreak.
She was still a healer, still a warrior, still a woman capable of rebuilding from ashes.

Part 5 – The Alpha Returns

Headlights flashed outside.
The front door opened, and Jaxson Thorne walked in as though nothing had happened.
He loosened his black tie, tossed his jacket on the hook—carrying the unmistakable scent of another woman’s perfume—and disappeared into the bathroom.
Aveline stood frozen.
Every sound—the running water, the creak of the floor—felt like thunder.
She wasn’t angry anymore; she was empty.
When he finally emerged in his robe, hair damp, muscles glistening, she realized how much power he once held over her.
That power was gone now.

Part 6 – The Perfume of Another

The air between them thickened with the scent of betrayal.
Jaxson smiled faintly, stepping closer.
“What’s with that look?” he asked playfully. “Miss me, babe?”
He wrapped an arm around her waist, his touch as casual as it was possessive.
Once, that warmth would have made her melt.
Now it felt suffocating.
Aveline stepped back.
The move caught him off guard; his brows furrowed.
“Are you upset again? Did someone bother you?”
He said it like a man used to being forgiven before the apology even began.

Part 7 – The Calm Before Goodbye

Aveline took a long, steady breath.
She could have screamed. She could have thrown the phone at him.
Instead, she turned to the drawer and retrieved a small locked box.
“Here,” she said quietly, handing it to him. “A gift.”
Her tone was so controlled that he almost smiled, thinking she’d finally softened.
Inside that box wasn’t jewelry or a token of affection—it was the legal document severing their mate bond.
Her signature glimmered at the bottom in dark ink.
For a heartbeat, she felt the invisible thread between them strain, preparing to snap.

Part 8 – The Wolf’s Decision

He looked puzzled, but she didn’t wait for his reaction.
She spoke evenly, her voice stripped of emotion.
“Four years, Jaxson. I gave you loyalty, trust, and love. You gave me lies.”
He opened his mouth to defend himself, but she raised a hand.
“No more excuses. You don’t have to explain the perfume, the late nights, the missing anniversaries. I already know.”
Her wolf stirred proudly at her strength.
This wasn’t the weak woman who used to beg him to stay.
This was the beginning of something new.

Part 9 – The Rebirth of Aveline

When Jaxson tried to reach for her again, she stepped aside.
His hand grazed the air where she once stood.
“You’ll regret this,” he said flatly, his pride pricked.
Aveline met his gaze without flinching.
“No,” she answered. “For the first time, I won’t.”
Her words cut deeper than any weapon.
Then she walked past him, out into the cold night, her wolf pacing inside her chest like a heartbeat of liberation.
In the distance, the moon hung low and red—an omen of endings, and beginnings.

Part 10 – The Alpha’s Fall, the Luna’s Rise

When Aveline closed the door behind her, Jaxson stood frozen with the open box in his hand.
He finally saw what she’d given him: the rejection papers that dissolved their bond.
The Alpha who thought he could own her had just been abandoned by the one woman who had ever loved him sincerely.
Outside, Aveline didn’t look back.
Tomorrow, she would join the Bloodmoon Research Facility, vanish from every record, and be reborn under a new name.
Her old life would die here tonight.
In its place, something stronger would rise—the woman her wolf had always known she could become.
Betrayed by her mate, freed by her pain, Aveline Russell walked into the dark with her head held high.
For once, the silence didn’t hurt.
It sounded like freedom.
