The next day started like any other, except Mia could barely sleep through the night.
Her mind had been racing, going over every possible scenario that could happen at today’s second interview or whatever it was. She didn’t even know what to expect, and that made her more anxious than anything else.
But for now, she had to focus on one thing at a time.
She woke Aiden up gently, brushing his soft curls off his forehead. Her little sunshine was still drooling on his pillow, his thumb in his mouth. She smiled softly, rubbing his back until he stirred.
“Morning baby,” she whispered.
He blinked up at her, sleepy–eyed, before wrapping his arms around her neck.
“Are you taking me to school Mama?” he mumbled against her shoulder.
“Yes baby. Excited” she smiled, holding him close.
Aiden says nothing, Mia chuckles.
Her son was growing up fast. In just a few months, he will be four years old.
He already insisted he wasn’t a baby anymore. In fact, he corrected her every time she accidentally called him that. He was “a big boy” now, at least according to him. And to be honest, he was acting like it more and more every day.
Dropping him off today was definitely different from back then. Then he’ll cry and cling to her legs, refusing to let go, making her feel like the worst mother in the world as she walks away.
It was a new school and he felt for his baby.
“Bye mama!” he said as he waved from the gate, his tiny backpack bouncing with each step he took.
“Bye, baby. Be good!”
Mia took in a deep breath, whispering a quick prayer as she turned and walked toward the bus stop.
When she finally arrived at ABL, she tried not to let the nerves get to her. The tall glass building felt even bigger than it did yesterday, and her hands were sweaty despite the cool morning breeze.
Still, she straightened her shoulders, wiped her palms on her skirt, and walked through the entrance.
This time, everything felt a bit easier. Like the anxiety had worn down just a little after surviving the first round.
She asked the receptionist where she was meant to go, and this time the woman behind the desk didn’t just point, she called a secretary to take her up.
The secretary led her through a long hallway with glass doors on each side. They finally stopped in front of one that made Mia’s heart skip a
beat.
“Marketing Director” was written boldly at the top.

The woman gave her a small nod, and Mia whispered a quick “thank you” before taking a shaky breath.
She raised her hand and knocked.
“Come in,” a voice said, calm but firm.
Mia turned the knob and pushed the door open.
And there she was.

The familiar woman from yesterday’s interview. She was sitting behind a large polish desk, spinning gently in her sleek office chair, her legs crossed as she stared straight at Mia.
For a second, Mia felt the air around her still. The room was big, clean, and intimidating in a way she couldn’t describe. And the woman in front of her didn’t look any less powerful.
She had that look, like someone who didn’t need to raise her voice to command a room.
“Good morning, ma,” Mia said politely, trying not to let her voice shake.
“Sit,” the woman said, pointing to a chair across from her without much emotion.
Mia obeyed quietly, placing her purse gently on her lap and folding her hands over it.
The woman picked up a file from her desk and stared at it for a moment, flipping through the pages slowly. Her eyes moved across the text, then back up to Mia. She didn’t smile.
“Mia Turner Rivers,” the woman said, her tone unreadable.
“Yes ma,” Mia replied, nodding softly.
There was something about the way the woman looked at her…calm but piercing…that made Mia feel like she was being judged down to her soul. And for a moment, Mia wondered if she had done something wrong, or if maybe she had food on her face. But no, the woman wasn’t looking at her clothes or her hair. She was staring at her like she knew her.
The woman raised a brow. “Should I address you as Mrs. or Miss?”
“Miss,” Mia said with a small, polite smile.
The woman paused. “Miss Turner,” she echoed.
Mia shifted slightly. “Miss Rivers is fine, ma.”
The woman blinked. Then she gave a short nod.
For a few seconds, there was silence again.
Then the woman leaned back and crossed her arms. “Tell me a little about yourself and why we should give you this job.”
Mia nodded slowly, even though her heart was already hammering painfully in her chest. She had rehearsed this in her head over a dozen
times. She could do this.
“Well,” Mia began, her voice soft but steady, “I’m a very hardworking person. I always try to give my best in everything I do, I enjoy working with people. I’m a fast learner, and I’m not afraid to take on new challenges.”
The woman’s expression didn’t change. She just stared.

Mia continued, “If I’m given the opportunity to work here, I’ll give it my all. I want to grow, and I want to contribute to the growth of this company. I believe ABL is doing great things, and I’d be proud to be part of that.”
She went ahead to tell her about her son, her school and the few projects she handled back at school.
She paused, waiting for some kind of response. Some nod, smile–anything.
Instead, the woman cut in. “You have a son?” for the first time Mia sees an emotion on her face.
The question came so suddenly that it caught Mia off guard, after everything she said that’s what she was more interested in confirming?
What if they don’t employ single mothers here?
