Chapter 16
Liam stared in disbelief at the laryngeal examination report in his hands.
“Mr. Walker, the examination shows that your speech issues are partly due to the selective mutism, and partly because a tumor has developed at the back of your larynx. Likely due to your recent extreme fatigue, this tumor has grown rapidly. We recommend scheduling surgery for its
removal as soon as possible.”
[I get checked every month. Why wasn’t this detected sooner?]
The oncology specialist glanced at Liam’s phone screen.”
Mr. Walker, I’ve reviewed your previous reports. The checks over the past three
three years indeed
showed nothing. However, last month’s report clearly indicated the tumor’s presence. Had it been
addressed then, the current severity might have been avoided.”
“Oh, and regarding that, Dr. Rossi personally took your report that time. As you know, her…
standing in the hospital is quite high, so other doctors refrained from further involvement in your
personal medical affairs.”
The doctor didn’t dwell on the topic, simply informing Liam of the precautions for the coming days
and offering several possible surgery dates.
Liam felt a turmoil in his heart. He raised his right hand and pressed his temple.
He felt so tired. It seemed ever since Isabella returned and Chloe left, his life had descended into
chaos.
He let out a long, weary sigh.
[Schedule the surgery for tomorrow morning.]
Lying on the operating table, Liam wasn’t particularly nervous.
The doctors, however, were very tense, continually reassuring him it was a minor procedure.
“Mr. Walker, rest assured. We’ll use the latest technology. The incision will be minimal, and the tumor will be removed through the mouth. For the month following surgery, you must stick to room–temperature liquids only. No further irritation to the throat.”

Liam nodded. The nurses turned him over, and anesthesia was administered through his spine.
He felt the cool liquid slowly entering his body, and then his consciousness gradually faded.
Liam dreamed.
He seemed to be back at the blind date with Chloe. He remembered it was just after Isabella had left
for abroad without a word.
Back then, Isabella didn’t know his true identity as the Walker heir. What he had admired was her
determination and courage to pursue her dreams, even if it meant leaving abruptly.
“Hello, I’m Chloe Thompson.” Liam followed the voice and saw Chloe from three years ago, at their
first meeting. Back then, he looked at her with disdain and contempt, looking down on the
pampered, sheltered daughters of wealthy families from the bottom of his heart.
“This is the eldest daughter of the Thompson family. Very accomplished. She’s completed her Bachelor’s in Medicine and received multiple graduate school offers. Even hospitals in the capital
wanted to hire her.”
His mother spoke highly of Chloe.
“Is Ms. Thompson not planning to continue her studies?” Liam’s mother asked.
Liam was also intrigued by his mother’s question and looked at the woman before him with curiosity. Three years ago, he had never paid attention to what Chloe studied, where she graduated
from, or her plans and aspirations.
“It is.” She held Liam’s gaze, a quiet certainty in her voice. “I’ve weighed every option. And choosing him isn’t just a feeling–it’s the only rational choice I have.”
Liam’s eyes snapped open. He struggled to sit up but was firmly pressed back down by the nurses.
“Administer more anesthesia! How did he wake up?!” He heard the doctor’s voice.
Liam’s eyes felt moist. He was slowly losing consciousness again.
He couldn’t recall Chloe’s actual answer from three years ago, nor where this sentence in his
dream came from.
He never knew Chloe had liked him so much, that she had given up so much for him.
His last conscious thought before sinking under was, I want to find Chloe again.
