Chapter 18
Liam flew to the UK on a chartered jet, accompanied by a team of private doctors and thirty million
dollars worth of new medical equipment.
The cabin air conditioning was fierce. Liam looked at the cold air pouring from the vents, his heart
feeling heavy.
No one spoke in the entire cabin. With his eyes closed, he could hear his own heartbeat.
He admitted he missed Chloe. But in the time since she’d left, he didn’t know how to face the
situation or what to think.
He was locked out–a ghost in his own life. His number, his email, every social media account–all of it, blocked and silent. The divorce decree was still in his briefcase. Truthfully, Liam had little confidence to actively contact Chloe. He could only spend more money, offer more… compensation, hoping to change her negative perception of him.
Liam had never felt the dozens of hours on a plane pass so slowly. He tossed and turned in the spacious first–class seat but couldn’t find a moment’s sleep. His private doctor checked his condition every hour.
When the plane finally landed, it was pouring rain in London. Liam, surrounded by seven or eight private bodyguards, was whisked directly from the VIP channel into a black van.
“Mr. Walker, we’ll check into the hotel first. As you requested, the monetary and equipment donations to the medical school Ms. Thompson attends have been fully processed. The equipment. arriving on this charter will be delivered shortly. Please don’t worry.”
The assistant reported the progress while showing Liam the successful transfer records on an iPad.
Liam pushed the iPad away with one hand and straightened his tie with the other.
[Not going to the hotel. Head straight to the medical school. Call the dean; tell him I’m on my way.]
“Then… should we ask the dean to notify Ms. Thompson to be present?”
The assistant hesitated, awaiting Liam’s response.
Liam fell into a rare silence.
[Please ask the dean to arrange a private meeting for me with Chloe.]

The drive from the airport to the school was only half an hour, but Liam was so nervous his palms were sweating on the armrests. He wasn’t sure if Chloe’s departure was a ploy, nor if she still had any feelings for him. He closed his eyes tiredly for a brief rest, but the discomfort and obstruction
in his throat persisted.
The dean of the medical school stood waiting respectfully outside the main gate, despite the pouring rain.
“Mr. Walker, thank you for your generosity.” Liam didn’t pay him much attention, hurriedly entering the research institute’s main door, flanked by bodyguards and his assistant.
Liam gave his assistant a look.
The assistant immediately turned and shook the dean’s hand in the rain.
“Dean, our time is very limited. Regarding the meeting with Mrs. Walker you mentioned earlier, where have you arranged it?”
The institute dean paused, his expression shifting uncertainly.
After a moment’s hesitation, he led the way.
It was in the medical school’s precision laboratory.
“I’m sorry, we have no right to compel students to attend non–academic events. To accommodate
Mr. Walker’s… request, we could only temporarily schedule an extra lab session.”
The dean’s tone carried a hint of displeasure, but Liam paid no mind. He pushed past the bodyguards and headed straight for the lab door.
The lab door was heavy, clearly not something one could just walk through. But it had a large glass
panel on top.
Just as Liam gestured for the dean to use his keycard, he heard the sound of Chloe laughing and talking with an unfamiliar man inside.
A wave of panic struck Liam’s heart.
He tried to recall; it seemed like an eternity since he’d last seen Chloe smile.
