Chapter 20
Liam fought to stay conscious.
A constant ringing filled his ears. He could only see Chloe’s agitated expression, her mouth moving, but he couldn’t hear her words.
He wanted to apologize.
He wanted to ask if she would come back, if she would consider not finalizing the divorce, but he
couldn’t get the questions out.
A single breath seemed stuck in his throat, neither rising nor falling.
He didn’t know if it was the mutism or complications from his recent tumor surgery.
Liam felt his throat was parched. The words he wanted to say felt like thousands, but in the end, they condensed into just one phrase.
“I’m… sorry.”
He used his right hand, trying desperately to grip the corner of a table to steady himself, but it felt like a huge black hole was pulling him from behind, preventing him from standing. His other hand reached out infinitely forward, trying to grasp Chloe. She wasn’t far, but it felt like he couldn’t
reach her.
“Ch… loe…”
His eyelids grew heavier. His throat was so tight even breathing felt difficult.
Time seemed to stand still at this moment. He sat on the floor in despair, gasping for air, forcing himself to stay conscious by staring at the floor. The ringing in his ears grew worse.
Then, one person after another rushed in. Someone helped him up; someone placed an oxygen mask over his nose and mouth. Finally, fresh oxygen flooded his lungs.
Chloe? Where is Chloe?
Liam seemed to be in a daze for a long time before recovering. Coming to, he ripped the oxygen mask from his face and forcefully resisted the hands pushing him forward on the gurney.
“Chloe!” His own voice rang in his ears, startling even those around him into freezing their
actions.

Liam stiffly turned his body to look back, but the sight plunged his mood back into the depths. The man who had been laughing and talking with Chloe moments ago was now looking at her with concern, a hand on her shoulder, seemingly asking if she was okay.
Chloe offered a simple smile, indicating she was fine.
Liam had never felt heartbreak so acutely before.
He suddenly remembered the night over three years ago when Isabella left. He only found out she was gone through a handwritten note.
It gave no reason, just stated the fact of her departure.
Liam’s feelings then were complex–sadness, frustration, the unwillingness and anger of being
abandoned.
Even after being diagnosed with selective mutism, he felt no fear, just a decision to no longer trust
others or engage in meaningless social interactions.
But now, what he felt was a tremendous, unprecedented terror.
He didn’t know what Chloe had just said to him, but he seemed to vaguely know the answer.
She would likely not choose him again.
Liam gritted his teeth, struggling step by step through the crowd, trying to reach Chloe once more.
Those few steps felt immense. He felt drenched in sweat. The blast of air conditioning raised goosebumps all over his body.
Liam shoved the man standing near Chloe aside. Chloe instinctively stepped back several steps, her expression and eyes filled with wariness.
He opened his mouth. The words finally came home to his voice.
“Remarry me.”
“Come home.”
But Chloe’s refusal was absolute. The coldness in her eyes deepened further.
The corners of her mouth turned down, her brows furrowed in clear distaste.
“No.”
