Chapter 26
“About the forum… I’m sorry.”
The words stumbled out of Liam’s throat. Chloe glanced at him. His expression was downcast, devoid of its usual cold arrogance.
It was replaced by an indescribable sadness and pain.
“I don’t need you using your power to do anything for me.
“If there’s anything I want or need, I will strive for it myself.”
Chloe’s voice was steady, her tone flat, as if she were truly just here to state facts.
“Three years ago, when I married you, I loved you, so I devoted myself to you, I fought for your love.”
“Three years later, I divorced you. I no longer need your love. Therefore, I will not invest any more emotion into this relationship. This is my choice for the present, and it has nothing to do with whether you love me now or not.”
“Liam Walker, do you know what I despise most about you?” Chloe suddenly looked up, staring directly at him.
Liam was also taken aback, his mouth slightly agape, unsure how to respond.
“What I hate most is your self–absorption. For the past three years, you lived in your own world,
stuck at the moment Isabella left. No matter how hard I tried, you never saw it.”
“Three years later, you are still incredibly selfish. Selfish enough to try to confine a me who wants freedom back by your side. What I want most is freedom, but because of your selfishness, you seek todeprive me of it.”
“This forum, I wanted to win, but I didn’t want to win this way. Because of your selfishness, I lost an award that should have been mine. Because of your selfishness… I am looked down upon and speculated about by everyone in the medical field. Maybe you can suppress them temporarily, but
what about later?”
“You should be with Isabella Rossi, because at your core, you are both selfish people. Your current frantic pursuit of me is merely another manifestation of your selfishness. Because right now, you selfishly demand that I return. You’ve never asked me if I’m willing, if it’s possible, if I need it.”

Every word, every sentence, struck Liam deeply.
The love, regret, and deep affection he believed he felt for Chloe were now stripped bare in this moment. The façade of this love–named deception was torn away too quickly.
He began to doubt himself–did he truly love Chloe, or was it just his own selfishness and obstinacy?
“Chloe… I’m sorry. The forum… was my mistake.” Liam lowered his head, speaking the words one by one. He did not attempt to persuade her to stay. It seemed there was no reason left to do so.
The Thompson family’s old house came into view quickly. The half–hour conversation felt both short and long. The car pulled over to the roadside.
Chloe unbuckled her seatbelt and was about to get out when Liam pulled her into his embrace. He held her like a precious treasure, desperately trying to press her into his very being, greedily inhaling the familiar scent of her neck.
“Can you… be the primary physician for my mutism?”
“Let’s start over, okay? Give me a chance to pursue you properly again?“Liam managed to say both
sentences completely.
Chloe pressed her hands against his chest and slowly pushed him away. Liam didn’t dare resist
further.
“Chloe! Can I… contact you again?!” Liam gripped the SUV’s door frame tightly, finally asking this
question.
Chloe, who was almost at her front door, paused at his words. She turned around. The eastern sky was beginning to show the first light of dawn. Day was about to break. Her heart felt a surge of lightness, matching the rising sun.
“Liam Walker,” she said, her voice clear and calm as the new day. “Don’t contact me again.”
