Chapter 5
Chloe lingered outside for a while. She bought a new phone, filed a police report, gave her
statement.
She finalized her plans for a master’s degree application later in the year with a study abroad agency and bought a plane ticket to the UKdeparting in ten days.
She planned to treat her hand while studying.
It was already 7 PM when she got home. Seeing the thick layer of dust on the half–packed boxes
confirmed that Liam hadn’t been back.
After a small meal, Chloe continued sorting through her things.
The lock clicked. The door opened. It was Liam.
He watched her movements, his face reverting to its usual cold mask. He sensed something different about Chloe today but couldn’t pinpoint what.
Without pause, he strode straight into the bedroom. The sound of frantic rummaging followed.
He stormed out, tearing through the neatly packed boxes of his clothes and belongings, scattering
everything.
“What are you doing?!”
Chloe stepped forward, but he shoved her aside, sending her crashing to the floor.
“Where is the voice recorder?!”
It was Liam’s voice. How long had it been since he’d spoken directly to her?
“What voice recorder? I haven’t seen it.”
Chloe spoke, noticing fresh blood slowly seeping through the bandages on her right hand.
The frantic searching continued. Chloe looked up, seeing a side of Liam she’d never witnessed-
disheveled, sweat pouring down his forehead, tie loosened, his suit jacket smudged with dust.
“Where is the recorder?!”
Liam stopped, looming over her.

“I told you, I haven’t seen it!”
For the first time, Chloe stood her ground. Using her left hand to push herself up unsteadily, she
met his gaze squarely.
Liam seemed distraught, his anger mounting. He clenched and unclenched his fists, finally slamming one into a nearby glass sliding door with a CRASH. Glass shards rained down.
“Where. Is. My. Recorder?”
Liam took several steps closer, his questioning relentless.
Blood dripped steadily from his right hand. Chloe had never seen him look so unhinged.
Summoning all her courage, she pushed him away and tried to limp out the front door.
“Um… testing? Okay. It’s Liam. Liam Walker. I’m eighteen today. And… I think I’m gonna tell Isabella Rossi that I… I have feelings for you. I really like you.”
“Isabella, it’s our two–year anniversary. I hope we stay together forever.”
“Isabella, three years together. This year’s wish is the same to be together always.”
“Isabella… why did you leave?”
“Isabella, I’m planning to get married.”
Liam stumbled against a pile of clutter, and a slightly worn voice recorder tumbled out from somewhere, its red light blinking as it began to play.
It was a collection of love letters Liam had recorded for Isabella, starting from his youth.
“Goodbye, Isabella. I hope I can see you again.”
“Goodbye.”
“Goodbye.”
The recorder seemed damaged from the impact, stuck on a loop, repeating “Goodbye” over and
over.
Liam scrambled to pick it up, frantically pressing the power button, but it was useless.

Chloe, who had been about to leave, stopped. She turned slowly, leaning against the entryway shoe
cabinet for support.
Tears streamed down her face.
“Liam Walker.”
“If you didn’t love me, why did you marry me?”
Liam’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He seemed to want to say something, but the words wouldn’t come.
[Let me explain, Chloe.]
The message flashed on his phone screen.
Chloe closed her eyes, forcing herself to stay calm.
She brutally suppressed the ache rising in her chest.
“Get out. Take all your things and get out of my house.”
Liam pressed his lips into a tight line, clutching the endlessly looping recorder, and brushed past
her out the door.
[Sorry.]
