Chapter 9
(Arrange for the presiding judge to come to theGroup.]
Liam sent the message to his assistant.
The next morning, he went as usual to the ENT department under his family’s name for a follow–up
on his selective mutism.
“Mr. Walker, your selective mutism has shown some improvement, but it’s still limited. I recommend you continue rehabilitation training with me… Mrs….. Ms. Thompson sent me a very long email some time ago.”
“It detailed the specific progression of your mutism over these past three years. I found it very enlightening. I believe we can start a new treatment course.”
“This course will use a completely new approach tailored to your specific situation…”
[No need.]
Before the doctor could finish, Liam typed his refusal.
[Transfer the records to Dr. Rossi. Ask her to make the arrangements for me.]
Liam left the examination room. His steps, initially intending to leave, halted. He changed-
direction. He had some time; he might as well go see Isabella.
“I told you to call me Mrs. Walker, not Dr. Rossi!”
Liam hadn’t even reached Isabella’s office door before he heard her voice.
He frowned and didn’t push the door open.
“Yes, yes, Mrs. Walker.”
“The hospital just notified us. There’s a meeting at 4 PM, and a surgery scheduled for you at 5 PM.”
The nurse inside spoke, her voice growing softer. Through the partially open door, Liam saw Isabella touching up her lipstick with a mirror. Several bottles of nail polish sat on her desk.
“And… the Chief of Medicine… the Chief of Medicine hopes you will adhere to the hospital’s employee handbook. Doctors… are not permitted to wear makeup, perfume… or nail polish during

work hours and surgeries.”
Before the nurse finished speaking, Isabella slammed her hand on the table with a BANG.
“Do you know who this hospital belongs to?”
“This hospital belongs to the Walkers. I just told you what to call me – Mrs. Walker. Do you think
my words carry more weight, or the Chief of Medicine’s?”
Isabella’s tone was slow but carried undeniable authority.
The nurse flinched, hurriedly clutching her files, and pulled the door open.
Instantly, she found herself face–to–face with Liam.
“M–Mr. Walker!” She bowed deeply, greeting him loudly.
Isabella turned around instinctively, looking surprised.
She immediately stood up, came over, pushed the nurse out the door, shooing her away
impatiently. When she turned back to Liam, her face was all smiles.
“Well, look what the cat dragged in. Here for me?”
She extended her right index finger, trailing it from Liam’s chest down to his belt buckle, then
hooked it, gesturing for him to enter the office. The bright red nail polish felt jarring to him.
“You. Shouldn’t…”
The words were barely out of Liam’s mouth before Isabella pouted playfully, squirming onto his knees. “Oh, come on,” she whined, her voice dropping to a silky, persuasive tone.
“Okay, okay, I know. Can’t be too conspicuous.” She tentatively lowered her head to kiss Liam’s lips, but his lips were pressed tightly together. He leaned back slightly, so their lips only brushed past each other. The action made Isabella’s body stiffen slightly.
“What, am I annoying you now?” she said with a playful pout, poking him in the chest. “Then I’ll go apologize to her.” She made as if to get up and leave, but Liam pulled her right hand back.
“Next time…”
“I know! Liam, I won’t, I promise!”
Liam felt a stifling sensation in his chest, wanting to say something but unable to get it out.

[My mutism records should have been forwarded to you. Can you oversee my next treatment
course?]
Isabella read the words on Liam’s phone, a flicker of impatience in her eyes.
“Mutism… Isn’t it almost better? Liam, as long as you spend more time with me, marry me, naturally get better, won’t it? You don’t need treatment at all.”

Isabella turned and took her passport from a drawer, showing it to Liam.
“Take me on a trip abroad next week, okay?”
[I still need one course of treatment.]
Liam typed another line. Seeing this, Isabella’s impatience grew. She directly broke free from
Liam’s hand, turning her back to him in a huff.
“I said no need! I’m a graduate of a top medical school too. Why don’t you believe me?”
“And ever since I came back, your mutism has improved a lot, hasn’t it? This kind of psychological
issue requires relaxation and getting out. I don’t want to work here anymore; it’s so boring every
day.”
Looking at Isabella’s back, Liam, for some reason, thought of Chloe.
“I’ll accompany you to every single treatment session from now on, okay?”
“I’ll stay with you until you’re completely cured!” Chloe’s smiling face appeared before his eyes.
After a long silence, he could only suppress the discomfort in his heart, stand up, and hug Isabella
from behind in a placating gesture.
“Rest. Now.” The words came out of Liam’s mouth one by one. He felt his throat itch and his chest
swell with an indescribable tightness.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Walker. The court’s judgment has been issued and is final. This is a matter of public
jurisdiction and cannot be altered.”
“I don’t think it’s necessary for me to come to the Group again. I have many other cases to handle.”
Liam opened his mouth to say something, but the earlier tightness in his chest remained. He couldn’t produce a single syllable.

Seeing his prolonged lack of response, the judge said goodbye and hung up.
Liam looked at the phone screen showing ‘Call Ended,‘ momentarily unsure how to react.
He and Chloe were truly divorced.
