Chapter 11
The moment the words left his mouth. Sebastian regretted them.
He had to admit, he was mostly just being spiteful.
He refused to believe that without Mia, he couldn’t survive.
If she could leave without looking back, then he could move on from their relationship just as easily.
He was about to explain that he was drunk and not thinking straight, tell Claire not to take it seriously.
But she nodded super fast, like she was afraid he’d change his mind.
“Yes, of course! How could I possibly say no?”
The dim lighting cast a rosy glow on her face.
She tried to look composed, holding her chin up, but her ears were bright red like they were on fire.
Sebastian opened his mouth but ended up staying quiet.
Wasn’t this what everyone wanted anyway?
Claire was from the same social circle.
The Whitmores could help him uncover the truth about what happened years ago and give Pierce Corp a major boost.
Marriage was just a tool for exchanging benefits–that’s what he’d been taught since he was a kid.
He and Claire would get married, be respectful to each other, keep things simple and calm.
But…
If his wife had been Mia, even a boring marriage would have something to look forward to.
That’s when it finally hit Sebastian-
Over those eight years when he’d lost everything, Mia had already become someone irreplaceable in his life for a long time.
When Claire got home, she immediately shared the good news with her dad.
Mr. Whitmore raised an eyebrow and nodded with satisfaction.
“About time he came to his senses.”
Looking at Claire’s blushing face, all starry–eyed like a lovesick teenager, Mr. Whitmore frowned and said sternly.
“We can figure out the wedding date later, but the engagement party needs to happen ASAP.”
He could use Pierce Corp’s reputation to expand his network while securing his daughter’s love life–so he quickly locked in an engagement date.
Everything moved so fast that when Sebastian sat in the bridal shop watching Claire try on dresses, it still felt totally surreal.
The wedding dress in the window slowly spun under the lights, the diamonds on the chest catching the light like they’d captured an entire galaxy in the fabric.

Delicate jasmine flowers were embroidered on the train.
Sebastian unconsciously smiled, imagining what Mia would look like in this dress.
If she wore this gown and showed up at their wedding, he thought Mia would definitely be the most beautiful bride he’d ever seen.
The fitting room curtain suddenly swooshed open, snapping him back to reality.
“Sebastian, what do you think?”
Claire shyly lifted her skirt and spun around in front of him.
“Do I look pretty?”
He suddenly went quiet, staring at her bare shoulders and neck, something dark flickering in his eyes.
Mia had a scar on her left shoulder from the year he tried to kill himself with charcoal–she’d gotten cut by the window’s metal grating trying to save him.
She couldn’t afford scar cream, so it just stayed there.
When Sebastian didn’t respond, Claire thought he was speechless from how gorgeous she looked. She got brave and wrapped her arms around his neck, standing on her tiptoes to kiss him.
Suddenly, he pushed her away, his voice shaking a little.
“Let’s go with this one. I’ll pay.”
Claire caught a flash of sadness in his eyes and was about to ask what was wrong when his warm suit jacket wrapped around her shoulders.
“Come on, I’ll take you home.”
Sebastian finished signing the check and bolted out of the bridal shop like he was running from something.
The whole drive, he didn’t say a word.
Claire had no clue what she’d done to piss him off, so she kept trying to make conversation, desperate to break the awkward silence.
When the car stopped outside the Whitmore house, her chattering was still buzzing in his ears.
Sebastian frowned, suddenly grabbed her chin, and kissed her.
Everything went quiet.
When the kiss ended, Claire shyly opened the car door and basically ran away.
He was halfway home when he noticed she’d left her phone in the car.
He rubbed his tired forehead and sighed.
No choice but to turn around and head back to the Whitmores‘.
On Mr. Whitmore’s orders, all the staff had already accepted Sebastian as the future son–in–law. Nobody stopped him–he walked right in.
The butler eagerly led him to the study.
“Mr. Pierce, Mr. Whitmore and Miss Claire are inside.”
Sebastian nodded, planning to wait outside, but then he heard raised voices inside.
“Dad, what are you even saying! Seb and I are totally true love!”

Mr. Whitmore snorted.
“He’s still hung up on that fish market girl. What happens if he finds out what you did to her? Think he’ll still want marry you?”
