“You know exactly what I mean, Alpha.” He shrugged lightly. “The Ace we know would be heading back to the pack with me by now. But you’re still standing here, like this place is suddenly your home.”
I shot him a hard glare, hoping he’d back off. He didn’t..
“So,” he continued, unfazed, “is this your new home now? The human world in Manhattan.” He paused. “Should we start looking for an apartment for you, or maybe you’ll buy a whole building with a penthouse. I’m sure the Brownleague pack will survive without you.”
He was being sarcastic, but I got his point. I should be back at my pack right now. Still, I couldn’t bring myself to leave Charlotte alone with Liam. A part of me was sure the attack wasnt really about me. It felt like they were after them. And that thought refused to leave my head. If those things came back and I wasn’t here… I wouldn’t forgive myself.
“I’m thinking of bringing in security,” I told him. “This house is too big, and I don’t feel right leaving them alone.”
Damien didn’t respond. His attention had drifted past me, his eyes fixed on something behind my shoulder. I followed his
stare.
Charlotte was walking toward us. She looked refreshed, wearing a knee length summer floral dress that took my breath away. I forced my hands inside my pocket to stop myself from pulling her into my arms.
“She’s beautiful,” Damien murmured through the mind link. “For a second, I thought she was an angel.”
A low growl rumbled in my chest before I could stop it.
“You better stop staring before I rip your eyes out,” I warned. He glanced at me, then his voice slid into my head again.
“The last time I saw her was that morning six years ago. She was in chains, chains you ordered me to put on her. Moon was slapping her, blaming her for killing your pup.” My hands curled into fists on their own. He kept going like he didn’t notice. “The mark on her face is gone now. She looks gorgeous. Hard to believe she’d ever agree to be with someone as vile and grumpy as you again. You should probably leave her for someone else.”
The growl that tore out of me was loud it cut him off. He only smirked, clearly enjoying it.
He stepped past me and walked up to her, stretching out his hand. “I’m Damien,” he introduced himself easily. “This grumpy man’s gamma.” His smile was too wide. I wanted to wipe it off his face.
Charlotte took his hand calmly. “I’m Charlotte,” she replied. “I’m a doctor.”
“Your fame supersedes you, Doctor. The whole world knows who you are.”
She flashed him the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen. The kind that hit me in the chest. She never smiles like that at me. With me, it’s always fights and arguments. Something sour settled on my tongue. It tasted like jealousy.
Then she turned to me. “I heard you talking about bringing in armed guards. I appreciate the thought, but no. I can take care of myself. I’ve been doing that for years. My son and I don’t need your help.”
“And how do you plan to protect yourself and Liam if something goes wrong?” I started. “I know you can fight. I know you’re strong. But Liam isn’t. You can’t fight knowing anything could happen to him the moment you turn your back.”
She opened her mouth to argue, then closed it. She clenched her teeth. She knew I wasn’t wrong.
“If you don’t want the guards,” I said, “then move to my pack.”

Her eyes went wide in horror. “Have you lost your mind. Alpha?

“I need to know you and Liam are safe,” I pressed. “And I can’t know that if you’re far from me. Come to my pack?
“I’m not doing that.” Her eyes were spitting fire. “And don’t ask me again. We were attacked because we went to your pack. If you had taken us home like I asked, we wouldn’t be standing here talking about protection. Please, leave us alone.”
“I can’t do that.”
Her brows pulled together. “What do you mean you can’t? Just stop showing up in my life and I’ll be safe. It’s that simple.”
I stepped closer, closing the little space between us. My heart wasn’t steady anymore. Her scent wrapped around me. My heart was beating erratically at our closeness. “If you won’t move into my pack, then you’re leaving me with no other choice.”
Her breathing shifted, becoming faster. Good. She felt this too. At least she knows exactly how she makes me feel.
“Choice?” she whispered. “What choice?”
I didn’t answer. I smiled, leaned in and sealed her lips with a kiss. It wasn’t rough or gentle, just enough to steal her breath away. She stiffened, her hands pushing weakly at my chest, but I didn’t pull away. I deepened it for a second, slowly and possessive before I let her go.
Her lips were warm when I pulled back.
“You’ll see me soon,” I murmured against her mouth, then turned and walked away with Damien, leaving her standing there,
stunned.
As we got into the car, he drove off. “If you dare say a word,” I warned.
He didn’t answer. He just smiled the whole drive back to the
pack.
