CHARLOTTE’S POV
vouchers
It was starting to feel like someone was on payroll just to ruin my mornings. Every day I woke up, there was always something about me on the news, waiting to ruin my mood.
I was packing my hair into a tight bun, rushing in and out of my walk–in closet in a hurry, when something on the TV caught my eye. It sounded like one of those fashion interviews, so I wasn’t really paying attention, until Ace’s Luna appeared on the
screen.
She was laughing at something the interviewer said, flashing her perfect set of teeth like nothing in the world bothered her.
“I know this is supposed to be off the record,” the interviewer leaned forward, lowering her voice slightly but still loud enough for us to hear her, “but I have to ask anyway. Did you see the papers? The one with your husband?”
“My husband is almost always in the papers. You’ll have to be more direct.” She had this signature smile on her face that never seems to fade.
“The photo where he was carrying a sleeping child, with a woman beside him,” the interviewer continued. “If you ask me, the woman looked like the mother. Which brings me to my main question. Do you think your husband, Ace Virel, is having an affair? Or does he have some secret family out there? You know you haven’t been able to give him a child, so do you think he went outside to get what he wanted?”
Moon’s smile didn’t waver. “If there’s one thing I know about Ace, it’s that he doesn’t cheat. He would never cheat on me. My husband is a one–woman man.”
She shifted slightly in her seat, crossing her legs slowly, her posture looking more confident. “Look at me,” she pointed a finger at herself. “Do you really think he’d leave this to look at another woman?”
The interviewer laughed openly. “So does that mean you know them?”
“Now you’re getting the point. My husband is a humanitarian. He told me that night that he picked up some beggars from the street and took them to a restaurant to feed them. I believe the photo was taken when he was taking them to a hotel so her son could sleep in on a bed. The plan was to buy them a home by morning.”
“Oh dear,” the interviewer breathed, turning toward the camera. That’s so sweet. The billionaire Virel may have a reputation as a ruthless man, but it seems he has a very kind heart. We all wish he’ll show more of that part of him.”
Moon nodded slowly. “But the woman disappeared that same night with her child. She stole Ace’s gold wristwatch worth over a hundred thousand dollars, and his ring.”
Her voice wavered. Her eyes suddenly became glossy.
“That’s why,” she added quietly, “I’m offering fifty thousand dollars to anyone who can give me information about the woman’s identity and whereabouts. Find the restaurant. Find the woman. And claim the money.”
Her lashes fluttered as tears spilled. Someone quickly handed her a box of tissues. She dabbed at her eyes.
“I’m so sorry about this,” the interviewer murmured softly, full of sympathy.
“That’s why people don’t help strangers sometimes. I’m not angry with them. I just want to help the woman and her son get off the streets. The ring meant a lot to my husband. It was an inheritance.”
I couldn’t watch anymore, so I turned off the television. I couldn’t believe this woman. She had just placed fifty thousand dollars on my head, like a bounty, after all the lies on a television Something about her made my skin crawl. The kind of feeling that sends shivers down your spine.
This is the woman Ace married? He has said multiple times that the marriage was only on paper, but the thought of it still
