I felt like shit, my head pounding like something was drilling into it, and my body was very weak. I hated not being in control of my own strength. But more than the pain still fighting inside me, I wanted to beat the shit out of Roman. He was being a complete shit head and it was getting on my last nerve. If I wasn’t like this, I would have shut him up already.
“I don’t know any woman that would want to mark you as much as Moon. You said it yourself and she told me the same thing when she came to my office over a week ago. I do not believe there is another woman who would randomly bite your neck for show.” I said nothing because I couldn’t argue with that. She was right, Moon is the only woman I know who has always wanted my mark.
In that elevator I couldn’t fight the woman off me. Thank goodness I wasn’t marked. The witch had been very clear with me, I am not allowed to mark another woman and I am not allowed to bear any woman’s mark either. If she had succeeded in that elevator, It would have been a complete disaster.
The door opened and the doctor walked in, he stopped the moment he saw me sitting up on the bed, his brows pulling together not liking what he was seeing. “I thought your marks have been healing on their own for weeks now, why is this still as it was last night?” he asked, stepping closer to the bed.
“The poison in his system forced the new marks out,” Charlotte said before I could speak. “That was why he almost died from it. The Ashfang poison is deadly and he was given an overdose, that’s why his body reacted the way it did.” She gently turned my shoulder so the doctor could see the raw lines stretching across my skin. “As for his body not healing, it has very little to do with the poison and more to do with him getting closer to the root of his curse.” The doctor went quiet at that, his old fingers pressing lightly against one of the marks while he examined it.
And how exactly is he supposed to get to the root of the curse?” Damien asked, leaning lazily against my dressing table. ‘We’ve been trying for years and nothing has worked. We’ve gone to different packs, different witches. We found nothing.”
Charlotte didn’t even look at him, her eyes stayed on me. “You know what you need to do. Going to hospitals and taking medications can only do so much. You need to find the woman you rejected in the past and earn her forgiveness. I’ve told you this before, I’m beginning to sound like a broken record.”
The witch also mentioned that and he has searched everywhere but she seems to have disappeared,” my doctor explained. He has been our family doctor for years, I’ve known him since I was little. He has kept my secret all this time but he doesn’t know that Charlotte is my mate.
There is no defined way to get out of this curse. The witch only told me that I was cursed for rejecting my mate and the other consequences that followed. She suggested I find her and try to make amends but it was only a suggestion, not a promise that it would fix anything. Charlotte has told me the same thing more than once. But how do I earn her forgiveness when she doesn’t even know she’s the one I rejected.
‘Ace, it doesn’t look like you’re making any attempts to find your mate,” Charlotte said, her eyes fixed on me, filled with
accusation.
‘It’s not just about looking,” Roman cut in. “Even if he did find his mate, he won’t be able to ask for her forgiveness.”
What the fuck is wrong with him today? He was really pushing it and I was this close to dragging him to his knees for playing with me like this.
“And why won’t he be able to do that?” Charlotte asked, clearly confused. “Finding her doesn’t mean she has to accept him back. It’s about earning her forgiveness.”
“You have no idea what he did to her,” Roman said, he was determined to piss me off. “The kind of pain he put her through. He didn’t outrightly reject her. He made her life a living hell.”

A low growl tore out of my chest and I shot him a fierce look that should have shut him up immediately, but he wasn’t even looking at me. He looked like this was his time.
“He wanted her dead at some point,” Roman added without hesitation. “So no, I don’t believe his mate would ever forgive him.”
“Roman!” I roared. I was weak but my voice still shook the whole room and he immediately bowed his head in respect. “Get the fuck out!”
He didn’t wait to be told twice. With his head lowered, he turned and walked out of my room without another word. He was my friend but today, he crossed the line.
Call me a selfish bastard, I don’t care. The only thing running through my head was fear. Fear that his words would trigger something in her. She has been having dreams about her past and every single day it scares the shit out of me. She told me her dreams mostly show her being bullied, being beaten, being treated like she was nothing. Roman’s words were stepping too close to that line. If she connects the dots, I’m finished.
Gavin was unusually quiet. He stood there watching everything but he said nothing. He was actually the first person I expected to open his mouth and spill everything, especially with the way he still wants to take Charlotte away from me. But for some reason today, he isn’t pushing it. And that silence is making me even more uneasy.
My eyes locked with Charlotte’s and I saw hurt, anger, resentment swirling in there. It takes me ages to build love and trust, but it only takes a few careless words from someone else to tear it all down.
“How he said it isn’t exactly how it happened,” I said, my voice dropping. “She did something wrong and received punishment for her actions.”
Even as the words left my mouth, I knew they weren’t true. The chef had died before we could get the full truth out of her but deep down I know now that Charlotte could not have poisoned Moon. I found out too late, I had punished her already for something she knew nothing about and now I feel like shit.
“It doesn’t matter to me what you did or didn’t do to your mate,” Charlotte said coldly. “And I’m not her, you shouldn’t be explaining anything to me. Look harder and I know you’ll find her. Then you can explain yourself to her.”
She turned and walked out of my room without waiting for a response.
My doctor hurried after her. “Doctor Graves, if the curse is feeding off rejection, wouldn’t confronting the mate too suddenly trigger a fatal backlash in his wolf?” he probed, “What happens if her wolf refuses the bond and forgiveness?” Her reply faded down the hallway as the door closed.
Now it was only Gavin and Damien left in the room with me.
“This will come back to you and it will come real hard you wouldn’t know what to do,” Gavin said coldly, his eyes closed in on me like he was already waiting for that day. “Her memories are coming back. She’s remembering people and one day she’ll remember you. What do you think will happen when she sees your face and remembers how you treated her?”
He was right and that’s what pissed me off the most, but it still wasn’t his business.
“And how the fuck do you know her memories are coming back?” I snapped.
He shrugged, stuffing his hands into his pockets. “That was how she knew me. She had a dream about me, heard my voice and recognized it the first time she heard it.”
He stepped closer to where I sat, not breaking eye contact. “She keeps having dreams. How long do you think it’s going to take before she sees you?” His voice dropped lower. “And who else has she been seeing in those dreams? Moon?”
