**Dallas’ p.o.v.**

As I sit in the backseat, the weight of confusion settles heavily on my shoulders. I find myself grappling with the peculiar choice their Mother made, singling out only one of her sons to embark on the journey of finding a Mate. My thoughts keep circling back to Charna’s insistence on their age.

Sure, they are significantly older than me, with their forty-eight years contrasting sharply against my youthful nineteen. But honestly, that age difference doesn’t faze me in the slightest, and I have a strong feeling it doesn’t bother them either.

In our world, time flows differently. We Shifters age at a languid pace compared to Humans, and our lifespans stretch far beyond theirs. It’s not unusual for Mates to have a considerable age gap; in fact, it’s quite common among Shifters. Nowadays, the path to discovering a true Mate-bond can be quite convoluted, often requiring considerable effort and time.

The process can stretch over a week, during which a mere connection has the potential to blossom into a Mate-bond. If that bond emerges from a genuine connection, we refer to it as a true Mate-bond. Conversely, if a bond forms without that initial spark, we simply call it a Mate-bond.

I could delve into the intricacies of our Mate-bonds, the laws governing them, and the myriad details that shape our existence, but if I were to start now, I fear I would lose your interest entirely.

Daxton and Darius represent my second connection, while my first connection is a tale you’re already familiar with. The question of whether a Shifter can have a third or even fourth connection lingers in the air, but the truth is, most of us end up bound to our first or second connections. Some choose to seek a Mate after their initial connection fails, but that’s a different story altogether.

“Where did you disappear to, Little One?” Darius’s voice breaks through my reverie, and I glance up to realize how much time has passed during our drive.

“Apologies, just trying to wrap my head around everything,” I reply, a hint of frustration creeping into my tone. “I need to share something important. I was asked to deliver the cancellation order for a reason. Nico was my first connection, and on the morning our bond had fully formed, he went and slept with Lucy—the one they introduced as the future Luna.”

I can feel the weight of their stares, all eyes focused on me, including the driver’s, who glances at me through the rearview mirror.

“Did she boast about it?” Pearl inquires, her tone curious yet laced with concern.

“No, Luna Pearl. Charna insisted I go to the Alpha floor, and that’s how we discovered the truth. I won’t bore you with the tedious details, just understand that the entire Pack is aware of what transpired,” I respond, keeping my voice steady.

As a Squad Captain, it’s my duty to know the name and face of every Shifter within the leadership of a Pack, and I’ve dedicated the last six months to mastering the Pack laws of every community. It’s been an intense study, far more rigorous than simply adhering to our primary Laws.

“Why would anyone choose her over you?” Luna Pearl’s question hangs in the air, and I hesitate, unsure if I’m ready to confront that painful inquiry just yet.

“Alpha Preston, could you enlighten us about the trial I proposed to Alpha Leon?” I shift the conversation, hoping to divert attention from that sensitive topic.

I listen intently as Alpha Preston explains the mechanics of the trial, his voice steady. “But I’ve never been in favor of it; no one else gets a say, and there’s no evidence presented to validate or invalidate the Alpha’s claims.”

A smile creeps onto my face as I pull out my phone to send a quick message to Elder Jensen. It takes mere seconds for him to respond, informing me that the Silver Eclipse Pack is one of the five Packs invited to observe the trial, and the King has made a slight adjustment regarding who will be in attendance.

Now, it won’t just be the Alpha and Luna of each Pack; their Beta and Mate will also receive invitations.

The invitations for the trial will be dispatched to the five Alphas the following day, allowing them ample time to prepare and familiarize themselves with the new trial regulations set forth by the King.

“Is something amusing you, Little One?” Daxton’s voice pulls me back from my thoughts, and I shoot him a mock-serious glare.

“Who are you calling little, Old Man?” I tease, unable to suppress a grin, and I hear Luna Pearl snicker, trying desperately to stifle her laughter.

Daxton stares at me, clearly taken aback by my cheeky jab, while Darius chuckles softly from behind.

“You do realize that if she’s calling Daxton an Old Man, it applies to you as well, right?” Alpha Preston interjects, and this time, Luna Pearl bursts into laughter, the sound brightening the mood in the vehicle.

Though they may be forty-eight, their youthful appearances would lead any Human to believe they’re in their early thirties—if Humans were still around to make that judgment. For us Shifters, this agelessness is the norm. I happen to know Elder Jensen’s age, and I doubt anyone could guess it just by looking at him.

“What about those files you mentioned earlier?” Daxton asks, finally recovering from my playful insult.

“Files I need to organize for the trial. They contain everything we’ve uncovered over the past year, and it’s crucial that all the footage is arranged properly. Tomorrow, you’ll understand why this preparation is vital, and I’ll do my best to address any questions you may have afterward,” I explain, my tone serious as I prepare them for the task ahead.

“We’re almost home,” Darius announces, pointing toward the dense forest that looms ahead. I gaze out the window, watching as the SUVs draw closer to the treeline.

Just a few feet into the forest stands a massive gate, guarded by six individuals—three in Human form and three in their Lycan forms. As our first SUV approaches, the gate swings open, and the guards bow their heads in respect as we pass.

We navigate the winding road toward the Pack-house, my eyes drawn upward to the towering seven-story edifice. However, I barely have a moment to appreciate the view before the SUVs veer right, taking a sharp left toward the side of the Pack-house.

Our SUV is directed into the underground garage, and Jesper nearly collides with a guard trying to halt his advance.

In a burst of energy, I scramble over Daxton’s lap to fling open the door and leap out while the SUV is still rolling into the garage; I need to ensure everyone is safe and sound.

“Dallas, wait!” Darius calls after me, but Rebel is well-trained, and I know he won’t harm anyone who doesn’t deserve it.

“JESPER, STAND DOWN!” I bellow, managing to halt him just in time to prevent a confrontation with the guard.

“Apologies, Alpha Preston. I think it’s time you explain to your Pack that I have a Squad here, and my second and third in command follow me wherever I go,” I assert, my tone firm yet respectful.

I notice Alpha Preston scratching the back of his head, a clear indication that he may have forgotten a few essential details about Squads and their Captains.
