Ever since then, a familiar figure has been lingering around me.
When Brody realized who it was, his mood soured for nearly two weeks straight.
One night, while I was reading, he looked over at me with red–rimmed eyes. “Do you still care about him?”
Without even glancing up, I replied casually, “Are you asking if I still have feelings for someone who now follows me around like a stray? Please. I don’t have time to pity beggars.”
Brody immediately burst out laughing, pulling me into a tight hug.
“Promise you won’t ever leave me again,” he murmured, voice a little shaky.
“I will die without you.
“I honestly thought I’d lose my mind when you chose him over me back then.
“I knew you weren’t happy,” he continued. “I kept reaching out, but you never responded. I was ready to give up until you finally said yes to marrying me.”
He smiled gently. “That day meant everything to me.”
I looked up and nodded, smiling back at him. “Me too,” I said softly, then pointed to my belly.
“She’s happy too.”
Brody looked at me in surprise. “Wait, again?”
I gave him a mischievous smile and whispered in his ear, “It’s a girl this time.”
He let out a joyful laugh and picked me up to spin me around. After that, he quickly set me down and gently placed a hand on my belly. “Sorry, sweet girl,” he whispered, grinning like a proud father. “Daddy just got a little too excited.”
I could not help but laugh at how adorable he looked, and playfully nudged him off the bed. “All right, now go get me some warm water to soak my feet.”
Brody immediately stood up and nodded like an eager student. “Yes, Ma’am!”

288 Vouchers
Just then, a message popped up on my phone from my assistant, “Boss, Sadie and the child have been brought back. She’s on her way to meet Patrick now.”
I smirked slightly. “Let’s see how this plays out.”
Sure enough, the next day, there was a buzz in the neighborhood. Apparently, a woman and a homeless man had gotten into a heated argument in the park nearby. The woman was holding a child and demanding that the man take responsibility.
People said the man completely lost control and threw the kid into the cesspit.
He accused her of lying to him about the child’s paternity and claimed she had betrayed him.
In their confusion and shouting, they ran into the road without looking. A truck could not stop in time, and they were tragically hit and killed.
The child, however, seemed unaffected. Witnesses said he kept asking to go back to Africa.
I turned off the tablet and leaned back in my seat, a strange calm settling in.
Everything that had once hurt me now felt distant. It was just like watching a story from someone else’s life.
The man was gently checking the water temperature for me from a short distance away–he was the one who truly brought me happiness.
