Chapter 300
Marcus was stunned, a sense of foreboding rising in his heart.
Alicia couldn’t help but ask, “Father, what do you mean? What do you mean by ‘gone“?”

Tristan sat down and carefully recounted the events of the past two days. “After he went to the prison that night, there was no news at all, as if he had vanished from the world.
“We tried to find out, but learned nothing.
He voiced his suspicion. “I suspect he was captured.”
“What?” Alicia was so shocked she jumped up. “How could this happen?”
Marcus was flustered as well.
If someone was captured, then why were they captured?
Who captured them?
Tristan was also unsure. Shaking his head, he speculated, “Either our mortal enemy captured them; or it was the King.”
Alicia staggered and collapsed to the ground.
Marcus felt a buzzing in his head. “So what do we do now?”
He thought, ‘If it was the mortal enemy who captured them, then… Nathaniel was dead, most likely by Callum’s people… It couldn’t have been done by Margaery, could it?‘
That didn’t make sense.
If it was his father, the King, who captured them…
Marcus simply didn’t dare to imagine it.
“There must be a reason, right? Could it be that the death squad confessed and said it was us?”
Marcus pondered the matter, feeling that something was off everywhere. “If they confessed that early, why hasn’t Father summoned me and Mother to the palace?”
Alicia nodded repeatedly. “It shouldn’t be because of that.
“After all, the one who died was Nathaniel.”
Tristan nodded. “That’s what we think too. If this matter really had been exposed, then not only you two, but the Minister’s estate would also be implicated. Even if our lives were spared, at the very least, our property would be confiscated and we’d
be exiled.
“But now, we can’t make sense of it.”
Marcus and Alicia were both bewildered.
Tristan said, “I’ve come to discuss with you and come up with a plan.”

In the end, with no other choice, Alicia could only hand over her token. “Father, send someone to the palace to investigate. This is my token; it will make entry and exit easier.”
Marcus thought for a moment and said, “If someone can find a way to distract Oswald, I’d like to go out and see for myself.”
“Alright, I’ll think of something after I return.” Tristan nodded. With no other option, he left with the token.
At this moment, outside the gates of the Inquisition Court, Chester saw Quinn, who was about to board his carriage and leave.
“Lord Thornton, please wait!”
He hurriedly caught up and stood in front of the carriage.
“Mr. Hadley?” Quinn smiled, turned to look at him, and gave a slight smile.
“Lord Thornton, have you seen my father in the past two days?” Chester asked anxiously.
“No.” Quinn’s face showed a look of surprise. “He hasn’t attended morning court these past two days, has he? I thought he had taken leave.
“What, has he gone missing?”
He asked knowingly, revealing nothing of his true thoughts.
Chester was stunned.
He was indeed missing.
However, since Quinn hadn’t seen him, that meant he wasn’t taken by the Inquisition Court; he might still be in the palace.
Or perhaps, after leaving the palace, he was seized by someone else.
It seemed that this afternoon, he would have to inquire at the Carey family.
He couldn’t tell Quinn that Seamus had gone to the Inquisition Court’s prison and never returned.
So, he could only force a dry smile and lie, “Not exactly. I have some business with him… I wasn’t home these past two days, and just returned to find he wasn’t at home.”
Quinn said, “I see. Then you should ask around; maybe he went to visit relatives. You never know.”
Quinn grabbed his hand, but his expression was as genial. “Or perhaps, he went to your family’s cemetery.
“After all, Seamus is still in his mourning period.”
Chester looked at his expression, at a loss for words.
Quinn really seemed not to know anything.
Quinn boarded the carriage.
Soon after, the carriage curtain was lowered.

Inside, he hummed softly, “To the Carey family.”
But this expression was not seen by Chester.

In the blink of an eye, it was afternoon.
The Carey family’s recognition banquet began. Guests gathered in droves, and Nathan was already there to host, arranging dozens of banquet tables in the main hall.
However, because Nathaniel was attacked, there were no decorations in the residence.
Everyone wore mourning bands on their arms.
The atmosphere was subdued, as recent events were far too grave and dangerous.
“I heard the King will be coming today.”
The guests whispered among themselves, “Nathaniel was attacked, and the King is leaving the palace today to attend the Star of Fortune’s recognition banquet. He must have high hopes for her.”
Even those who looked down on Margaery had to become more cautious now.
Margaery had not yet arrived.
She was in the backyard and saw Dashnell, who had arrived early, and her heart was filled with exceptional joy.
“Dashnell, you didn’t go to the front yard?” Margaery pushed him into the house, her voice was lively.
“There’s nothing worth seeing among the people in the front yard,” Dashnell smiled, “I’ve prepared a gift for you, and I didn’t want to give it in front of everyone. That would make me a target.”
He spoke much more casually than usual, making people feel at ease.
As he spoke, he handed her a notebook.
Margaery opened it and exclaimed in surprise, “Your training records?”
Dashnell’s handwriting was not as refined as his outward demeanor suggested; instead, it possessed a vigorous sharpness that pierced the paper, like a wandering dragon or a startled phoenix, exuding a regal aura.
Margaery treated it as a treasure. “How should I thank you, Dashnell?”
Many of the things written inside were exactly what she had been pondering and considering over the past few days.
With Dashnell’s notes for comparison and correction, it became even more complete.
Dashnell liked seeing her smile, which was so lively, like the brilliant sun in spring, radiant but not blinding, full of vitality.
He smiled, his face showing a sweetness that seemed to overflow with affection, and his tone was gentle and warm. “It’s enough if I can help. Your liking is the greatest thanks to me.”
Margaery’s heart raced, and she spoke candidly, “I not only like the notes, I like you even more.”
“You’re truly brave,” Dashnell said. He raised his hand and lightly tapped her on the bridge of her nose.

Margaery’s face flushed, but she was not shy; it was because of her passion and the stirring in her heart.
After a moment, she said, “I miss you very much, even though I get to see you every few days

“Me too.” Dashnell held her hand. “The time we spend together is always too short, but it’s all right. We’ll steal a moment
here to talk.
“Once this moment passes, it’ll be back to socializing
They still needed to avoid suspicion, or else there would be impeachment in the court and trouble stirred up in the harem, creating obstacles for us.
Margaery became serious and spoke about Callum.
After recounting the events that occurred at the Carey family today, she looked at Dashnell and asked, “Dashnell, do you have any news from the palace? I am unfamiliar with the inner workings of the imperial palace and do not know by what means they might smuggle explosives inside.”
In times of crisis, even moments of intimacy were scarce.
There were still final matters to be discussed.
“Do not worry,” Dashnell replied, a rare chill flashing in his eyes. “On New Year’s Eve, my family, the ministers of the court, and the scholars participating in the imperial examination will all be celebrating in the palace.”
He raised his eyes to look at her. “And you as well.”
