Chapter 185

Yara caught the slightly mocking look in Marina’s eyes, and a flash of surprise crossed her own. In that instant, she understood the hidden meaning behind Marina’s words.
Her hand at her side tightened slightly.
She had been waiting for Lavern for so many years, and she didn’t want to wait any longer.
But now, the ties between the Slav family and Lavern ran too deep. She couldn’t afford to recklessly reveal herself in front of Marina.
Now was not the right time for Marina to find out.
“Marina, I know you misunderstood me because of what Shawna said last night. There’s really nothing going on between Lavern and me. He only cares about you,” Yara said.
“If what Shawna said was true, then why did she sign that agreement for Lavern last night? Lavern hurt her like that; anyone else wouldn’t have forgiven him so easily. The fact that she signed it shows she knew she was at fault,” Yara added.
Marina had seen Yara and Lavern return to the hotel last night, and she knew right away that Shawna must have decided not to press charges against Lavern, which was why he was able to leave.
But none of that really had anything to do with her.
She was just using Shawna’s words to stir up Yara’s anxiety, that was all.
“Ms. Slav,” Marina said.
Her lips parted slightly as she spoke, her voice cool and her gaze distant as she looked at Yara.
Yara’s face flickered at the formal address.
“Marina…” Yara hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper.
Marina cut her off. “Lavern and I are done for good. There’s no way we’re getting back together. Doesn’t it hurt you, coming here and trying to convince me for his sake? Why keep fooling yourself?”
Yara opened her mouth to say something, but seeing how distant and determined Marina looked, she just couldn’t get the words out.
Marina shot her a cool, unreadable look, her eyes void of any emotion.
“You’re not the only one in his world. He’s not doing all this just for you; he’s even using you and the Slav family as his cover. Honestly, I don’t get it. What are you really after?” Marina said.
Shawna’s presence wasn’t just a humiliation for her. It was a public slap in the face for Yara.
Yet even now, Yara was still covering for Lavern, trying to plot against her.
Marina’s words cut deep, like a blade straight to Yara’s chest, leaving all the lines she’d rehearsed completely useless. Yara could only stand there, stunned and defeated.
Marina didn’t say another word. She opened her car door and go in..
Yara stood there, dazed, not moving herself and step aside.

As Marina’s car passed by, Yara couldn’t help but mumble softly.
“Marina, honestly, there’s nothing between Lavern and me,” Yara said, her words barely above a whisper.
Her voice was so faint, even she didn’t believe it herself.
Marina didn’t even spare her a glance. She just hit the gas and drove out of the garage.
Yara stood there, steadying herself against her car, barely keeping herself from sinking to the ground.
Marina’s words made it evident that she was onto everything now.
Yara frantically grabbed her phone and dialed Lavern’s number, but he didn’t pick up.
With no other choice, Yara had to call her father.
“Dad, destroy all the family ledgers right away. And tell uncle to lay low for a while,” Yara urged, her voice tight with panic.
“I’m afraid Marina already knows about everything between Lavern and me,” Yara added.
Scamming investors like that was outright fraud.
If Marina really had the evidence and decided to press charges against her father, there’d be no way for them to get away with it.
And her uncle, the one who cooked the books for them, would be in just as much trouble. Her aunt would get caught up in it, too.
Every direct relative in the Slav family would be facing jail time because of all this.
Yara didn’t dare let her guard down for a second.
After hanging up, she rushed into the elevator and headed straight for Lavern’s office.
When she pushed open the door and walked in, Lavern was at his desk, working, his phone sitting right next to him.
Lavern’s expression darkened the moment he saw Yara, and he said in a low, grim voice.
“Are you crazy? What are you doing here at the office?” Lavern snapped.
Yara tapped Lavern’s number on her phone, and his phone rang instantly.
Turns out he wasn’t busy at all. He just didn’t want to answer her
Yara’s heart felt like it’d been stabbed, and Marina’s words haunted her: “You’re not the only one in his world.”
“Why didn’t you pick up?” Yara demanded, her voice cracking with frustration.
She was barely holding it together, practically losing it as she yelled at Lavern.
Lavern’s face darkened. He rushed to the door, dragged Yara inside, and slammed it shut behind them.
Seeing Yara clearly upset, Lavern reached out and took her hand his voice softening.
“I was busy, and my phone was left here in the office. I didn’t seet. I literally just got back as you came in.” Lavern explained.
Yara didn’t buy it for a second.
Lavern said softly, looking helpless. “If you don’t believe me, I can show you the security footage right now, okay?”

Seeing how serious Lavern looked, Yara took a deep breath and decided not to push it any further.
“Marina might already know about us. Just now, she…” Yara began her voice shaky with anxiety.
Lavern cut her off before she could finish, pulling his hand back his eyes suddenly alert and cold.
“Did you say something to her?” Lavern snapped, suspicion flashing in his eyes.
Ever since Marina found out about Shawna last time, Lavern just couldn’t let it go.
If Shawna hadn’t secretly sent Marina so many messages, Marina never would’ve known about her.

Things between us would still be good, and the company wouldn’t be in trouble. He wouldn’t have to sell his shares.
Yara glanced down at the hand that had just held hers, still warm and took a deep, steadying breath.
“Do you really think I’m as clueless as Shawna?” Yara snapped, her voice tinged with hurt.
Lavern frowned, his tone low and serious. “I’m worried you’ll lose your head if you get too worked up. You know we can’t let her find out about us. I don’t have her completely under control yet, and the company still needs her around. For our future, you need to stay calm.”
Yara’s hand at her side tightened unconsciously, her knuckles turning white.
“So why couldn’t you keep it together and had to go stir things up with Shawna?” Yara snapped, her voice laced with accusation.
“If Shawna hadn’t gotten involved, things wouldn’t have spiraled out of control like this,” Yara said, bitterness heavy in her
tone.
Yara sounded bitter, and Lavern’s face darkened, clear irritation flashing in his eyes.
“Shawna was a mistake, that’s all,” Lavern brushed it off.
“Yara, you used to say you didn’t care about any of this stuff, that just being with me was enough,” Lavern reminded her, his voice icy.
“So now you’re dragging Shawna into this. Are you here to start drama? Is that what you want, to fight with me over this?” Lavern challenged, his eyes narrowing.
Yara looked at Lavern, her gaze wounded, eyes brimming with tears.
‘So Marina could confront him openly and make a scene. But me, I don’t even have the right to get upset. She thought.
