Daron nodded slightly. “Mm.”
Marina fell silent, focusing on the road. She could constantly feel Daron’s intense stare from the passenger seat.
She tightened her grip on the steering wheel, discomfort prickling at her nerves.

As they waited at a red light, Daron asked her in a low, deep voice from beside her. “Bringing Apollo on board isn’t really your responsibility. So why did you want to go see Karissa?”
Marina couldn’t bring herself to meet Daron’s gaze, her eyes glued to the red light ahead.
“Just wanted to challenge myself. Since you couldn’t close the deal, I figured I’d see if I could,” she replied.
Daron arched an eyebrow, a low chuckle rumbling from his chest.
“Not bad,” he said.
Marina flashed a confident little grin. “Obviously.”
As she spoke, she turned to Daron, her eyes meeting his smoldering gaze. She nervously nibbled at her lip, feeling her heart skip a beat.
It hit her then that her voice had slipped into that soft, playful tone she only ever used around Elnora.
The light turned green, and Marina drove off.
All of a sudden, Daron reached over and brushed her silky hair back behind her ear.
Marina almost jumped in surprise, her hand reflexively swerving the wheel.
Quick as lightning, Daron shot out a hand and grabbed the wheel, keeping them on course.
Marina stared at him, heart still pounding from the scare.
“Why did you just reach over out of nowhere like that? What was that for?” Marina blurted out.
Daron glanced at her reddened ears and said, “I was just tucking your hair behind your ear. Why are you so nervous?”
Marina chose to stay silent, keeping her full attention on the road.
Her heart was still pounding, her chest tight with a bittersweet flutter she couldn’t quite place.
Daron leaned back in his seat, adjusted to a comfortable position and cast her a sidelong glance.
“Let me know when we get to Silkwind Kitchen,” he said in a low voice.
“Okay,” Marina replied.
As Daron closed his eyes, the car fell quiet.
Marina focused on driving, but now and then, she couldn’t help glancing over at Daron in the passenger seat.
Just when she thought he had drifted off, she suddenly heard his deep voice right beside her. “I just can’t figure it out. Why won’t you marry me?”
Marina’s knuckles went white on the wheel, but she kept her mouth shut. She just couldn’t bring herself to answer him.

Why bother answering something I’d already said a million times before? Marina thought.
After all, this was the same question that had haunted them for a decade.
Daron didn’t push her any further.
Daron kept his eyes shut, like he’d never said a word, leaving Marina to wonder if she’d imagined it all.
When they pulled up at Silkwind Kitchen, Marina parked and shot a look at Daron sitting beside her.

He still had his eyes closed, brow furrowed tight, just like when she’d found him lying on his couch earlier today.
Marina couldn’t help staring at his handsome face for a while.
‘Honestly, the only pain Daron ever tasted in his life was probably me dumping him out of the blue, Marina thought.
‘Getting stuck in his memory like that? I’d call that a win for me, she mused.
Marina bit her lip, finally looked away from him, and glanced at the Silkwind Kitchen sign.
“Mr. Zamora, we’re here,” she said.
Daron replied with a clear “Mm,” making it obvious he hadn’t been sleeping at all.
He opened his eyes, stepped out of the car, and when he saw Marina still sitting inside, he bent down to look at her.
“Come on, get out and eat with me,” he said.
Marina replied, “I’ve already eaten at the Skinners.”
Daron said, “There’s something work–related I want to talk to you about.”
Marina just said, “Oh,” then got out of the car and followed Daron into Silkwind Kitchen.
Daron ordered some of Marina’s favorite dishes.
But Marina was still stuffed from eating at the Skinners‘, so she barely touched her food.
Once Daron was almost done eating, Marina finally spoke up. “Mr. Zamora, didn’t you say you wanted to talk about work?”
Daron replied, “We’ll talk tomorrow. No work talk while we’re eating.”
Marina just stared at him, baffled.
‘Seriously? Wasn’t he the one who said he needed to discuss work when he dragged me out of the car?‘ Marina thought.
Marina got up first as soon as Daron finished eating.
“I’ll go get the car,” she said.
Daron reached out and caught her wrist.
Marina froze, confused, and looked at him.
The next moment, Daron stood up, snatched the car keys straight from her palm, and said, “I’ll drive.”
Marina couldn’t help but ask. “You didn’t drink at the party, did you?” she asked.
Daron shook his head. “No.”

Marina just replied, “Oh,” and quietly followed Daron out of Silkwind Kitchen.
As they walked out together, Daron headed straight for the passenger side and opened the door for Marina.

Marina paused, staring at Daron looking every bit the gentleman For a moment, she realized she’d finally come into her own, confident enough to let her boss open the door for her.
Thinking about how she’d proved herself worthy of working alongside him, she felt a quiet sense of pride bubbling up inside.
“This is exactly what I deserve, Marina thought.
She mentally put her hands on her hips, then bent down and slipped into the passenger seat.
After tonight, Daron probably sees me in a whole new light. Next time I’m back at the Finley Group talking about a partnership between the Finley and Zamora families, he’ll actually give it some real thought, Marina mused.
She was busy mapping out her next steps in her mind, not even noticing that Daron was driving her straight back to the Finley family home.
When they arrived at the front gate, Daron stopped the car and glanced over at her.
“Get some rest. Goodnight,” he said.
Marina finally looked up at the gate, blinked in surprise, and said “My car’s still in your garage.”
“My car’s still parked at your place,” Marina said.
Daron replied, “Don’t worry. Even if you moved the whole Finley fleet over, my garage’s got room for all of them.”
Marina just said, “Oh,” and was about to get out when her phone rang.
She saw it was her sister calling and picked up right away.
“Hey, Elnora,” Marina greeted.
Elnora gave a simple “Mm,” and got straight to the point.
“Didn’t you say you weren’t really happy with Larry? So, I’ve set you up with another blind date tomorrow. Since you’ve been working late, I made it for the evening. Just go meet him if you can. It’ll be at Gracefall Dining, and the time depends on when you get off,” Elnora said.
Marina didn’t hesitate for a second. She agreed right away. “Alright, I’ll call him after work.”
Once Elnora got her answer, she hung up without another word
Marina opened the car door and got out, completely unaware of the dark look on Daron’s face.
She was just about to bend down and say goodbye when Daron hit the gas and sped off right in front of her.
Meanwhile, Elnora was sitting in the Finley family’s security room, watching the front gate on the monitor. As she saw what happened, a triumphant smile tugged at her lips.
‘Let’s see how long Daron can hold out,‘ Elnora thought.
