Marina’s eyes fell on Daron, and for some reason, she felt a strange sense of unreality wash over her.
Ever since Daron had startled her last time, she barely dreamed anymore.
Now, seeing Daron like this, Marina thought to herself, ‘Is this really happening? It feels almost unreal, like I’m in a dream!
Since she hadn’t answered Daron for a while, he turned and walked over, checking her forehead with the back of his hand. He teased in a low voice. “Not awake yet?”
As he spoke, he bent down so his eyes were level with hers.
Marina finally snapped out of it, her eyes meeting Daron’s. She gave an awkward smile and said, “No… not really.”
“No… not really.”
His gaze was so intense, Marina felt like he could read her like a book.
She felt a bit awkward as she answered, quickly shifting her eyes away.
“Good,” Daron said.
“If you end up catching a cold from napping here and miss that set–up, your sister’s gonna blow up my phone with texts again.”
Marina paused, confused. ‘Wait, I don’t remember having any blind date planned for today!’
“Did my sister call me?” she asked.
Marina pulled out her phone and checked. Sure enough, she saw a call had already been picked up.
It must’ve been when Daron came downstairs and saw her sister calling, so he answered it for her without thinking.
Daron just replied with a “yeah” and went back to making the soup.
Marina stared at the call log for a few seconds, hesitated, and ended up calling her sister back.
As she dialed, Marina automatically
alked out of the living room and made her way to the underground garage.
Daron watched her leave, his gaze growing darker and more unreadable.
His hand clenched tighter around the ladle.
Elnora picked up almost immediately.
Her voice was husky and sexy, like she’d just woken up.
“Hey, sis,” Marina greeted.
Marina was an adult. She could easily tell what was up on the other end.
“Did I catch
Elnora chat a bad time asked.
her throat, her voice cool and a little distant.
“Then spit it out already,” she said.

Marina bit her lip and said softly, “Sis, I really don’t want to meet with Waylon.
“He just rubs me the wrong way.”

Elnora went quiet for a moment, and then Marina heard a sharp slap in the background, like someone just got hit.
There were some rustling noises on the other end, and then Elnora’s voice came back, cool and distant.
“So you’re not into Waylon?” Elnora asked.
Marina mumbled a “yeah,” her voice sounding a little guilty.
“Sis, even if it’s just a blind date, I don’t want to settle for someone awful,” Marina said. “Can you set me up else?”
with someone
Elnora’s voice came through, a little rough. “Sure, I can arrange someone else. But Daron said he’d introduce you to some good guys once you’re back. Didn’t he tell you?”
Marina paused, her grip on the phone tightening a little.
“Really?” she said. “He didn’t say anything about that.”
As she spoke, Marina bit her lip so hard it almost turned white.
Elnora said, “Why not ask him? He’s got plenty of connections, probably some real catches.”
Marina’s eyes rimmed with red. “Sis, you know I can’t just bring that up to him, and yet you still push me like this.”
Hearing the tremor in Marina’s voice, Elnora realized if she kept teasing her, Marina might just break down and cry. So she said calmly, “He only said that because I pissed him off.”
“Marina, do you really not know what you want, even now?” Elnora asked.
Marina bit down hard on her lip, silent for a long moment.
“It’s not that I don’t know,” Marina finally whispered. “I’m just afraid to want it.”
Elnora was quiet for a while, and then Albert’s voice came through the phone.
“What’s there to be afraid of? Just look at me. I’m not scared to go after what I want,” Albert said. “If you like someone, you gotta chase after them and fight for it.”
Marina just went silent.
Not everyone’s got the kind of backing Albert does, enough to go all out for someone like Elnora.
Another crisp slap rang out from Elnora’s side, and Albert’s voice came back with that mischievous tone.
“Did your hand get sore? If not, you can come smack me over here too,” Albert joked.
Marina just went quiet.
“Alright, I’m hanging up now, sis,” Marina said.
She couldn’t deal with this right now.
Elnora just hummed, and right as Marina was about to hang up, she added in a cool voice. “Co see Waylon tonight. Maybe you’ll figure out if you really have the guts to go after what you want.”

Marina’s eyes flashed with confusion, and just as she was about to ask, Elnora added, “Just make sure you stay safe”
Just make sure you stay safe.” With that, Elnora hung up.
Marina froze, staring at her phone for ages before her gaze drifted back toward the house.
Daron had breakfast ready and was coming out of the kitchen. Their eyes locked for a moment, and Marina clutched her phone a little tighter.
She tried to compose herself, then stepped back inside.
Daron set a bowl of egg noodle soup in front of Marina and said in a calm voice, “Eat up.”
“Eat up.”
Marina murmured her thanks, sat down across from him, and lowered her head to eat.
Back in Sicester, Marina had already tasted Daron’s cooking before.
He knew his way around the kitchen.
It was a total contrast to the cold, intimidating CEO vibe he had in public.
Maybe she was just being too quiet, barely saying a word. Daron glanced up at her from across the table and asked in his low voice,
What, that phone call got you all quiet now? Did your sister ask you to go on that blind date? Not feeling Waylon?”
Marina shook her head with a faint smile.
“My sister didn’t push me into it. The set–up was my own choice, and Waylon was too,” she said.
Daron’s hand tightened slightly around his fork.
Marina lowered her head and, in a quiet voice, asked, “Honestly, I’ve never been great at picking guys. Daron, my sister said you know a bunch of good guys. Maybe you could introduce me to some?”
She was on edge as she asked, waiting anxiously for his response.
Deep down, she was hoping Daron would give her a different answer.
But Daron didn’t even hesitate to agree. “Sure.”
Marina just went quiet.
My sister was probably just trying to make me feel better, so she covered for Daron, Marina thought. Otherwise, there’s no way Daron would’ve agreed so easily.‘
Marina took a deep breath, forcing herself to keep her emotions in check.
She looked up at Daron again, her eyes crinkling with a gentle smile.
“Guess I’ll be counting on you then, Daron,” she said lightly.
Daron just shot her a glance, staying silent.
Marina just focused on her food, not saying another word.
After breakfast, Daron retreated to his room to get some rest.

Even though he told Marina not to worry about cleaning up and that someone would come by and handle it, she still ended up clearing the table and washing the dishes herself.
She checked the time and put in an order for Daron’s meal for the day.
As she was doing it, for some reason, her nose started to sting.
Tears welled up in her eyes.
Just like Elnora said, she finally understood.
Daron had already let go, and now it was her turn.
