Chapter 340
Marina watched Carter’s anxious expression, a cold smile tugging at her lips.

“I won’t work with you. Elnora is perfectly fine, so stop cursing her. Chris was Grandpa’s most trusted man, so I trust him
too.”
“As for you, just go find somewhere to enjoy your retirement. Grandma’s fund should be enough for you to live out your golden years comfortably. At your age, is it really worth busting your ass for a son who isn’t even yours by blood? He’s not your flesh and blood.”
Marina deliberately aimed her words right at Carter’s sore spots.
Carter’s expression twisted with rage. He raised his hand, about to hit Marina, but before he could do it, someone grabbed
his wrist.
“You…!”
He spun around and saw that the person holding his wrist was Daron.
Instantly, Carter plastered on a fawning smile.
‘Daron, what brings you here?”
Daron shot a cool glance at Marina, standing across from Carter. Seeing she was perfectly fine, he answered Carter in a calm, detached tone, “I’m here to find someone.”
Carter remembered that Elnora and Daron went to school together, so he just assumed Daron was here for her. He flashed a smile and said, “Daron, bet you didn’t know. Elnora’s not at the office right now.”
As he said this, Carter shot Marina a look full of threat, as if he was warning her, “If you don’t play nice, I’ll let the whole world know Elnora’s sick.”
But when Marina caught his threatening stare, her eyes stayed cool and steady, like she was just waiting to see what trick he’d pull next.
Daron released Carter’s wrist, clearly uninterested in anything Carter had to say.
Carter’s expression shifted. He looked up at Daron.
“Daron, you and Elnora have been working together lately, right? I watched you grow up, so just a heads up, don’t let family ties mess with your head. Elnora’s not in the best shape lately, so be careful. If your project with her tanks because of her, you could end up losing everything you put in.”
Daron frowned, giving Carter’s sycophantic grin a mocking chuckle.
“Who told you that?”
Carter blinked, thrown off by Daron’s question. He’d expected Daron to care about Elnora’s health, not where the news came from.
“I’m her father. It’s not hard for me to know these things. Daron, don’t think I’m making this up. I’ve got her medical files and the official diagnosis to prove it. Secrets like this don’t stay hidden for long. Sooner or later, the truth about Elnora’s illness will come out.”
Daron stared at Carter, his face unreadable.

“Go ahead, spill it.”
All Carter could do was gape at him, lost for words.
Every single thing Daron said was completely out of left field for Carter, totally not what he expected.
“Wait, what?” Carter blurted out, completely thrown.
For a moment, he honestly had no clue how to answer Daron.

Daron walked right past him, reached out, and pulled Marina over to his side, slipping his arm around her waist.
Carter watched Daron’s move, his expression turning complicated. He asked cautiously, “Daron, did you already know about Elnora having stomach cancer?”
Daron just nodded in response. “Yeah. I knew from the very start.”
Carter was at loss of words.
All these years, Carter had been pulling all sorts of shady moves behind the scenes, but in front of the public, he always tried to keep up a decent image.
But neither Elnora nor Marina ever played along with his act.
So no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t pull off the whole “good dad” persona.
He wanted to get back in with the Finley family and slide right back into his old circle.
And since Daron was basically the big shot in that scene, Carter was extra careful not to ruin his reputation when Daron was around.
Finding out that Daron had known about Elnora’s cancer from the very start, Carter could only manage an awkward smile.
“No wonder. Elnora’s always been so upfront. She tells it like it is and never leaves her partners stressing out.”
Marina looked at Carter’s phony expression and just found it hilarious.
‘Didn’t you just threaten to expose my sister’s illness?‘ Marina shot back, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
Carter’s lips tightened as he replied, his voice flat.
“Marina, you must’ve misunderstood me. I never said that. I’m just worried that since Elnora hasn’t been at the Finley Group lately, someone else might leak the news.”
Marina’s eyes dripped with sarcasm.
‘Seriously, this is the man who’s supposed to be our dad?‘ she thought, unable to hide her contempt.
‘Absolutely ridiculous, she scoffed inwardly.
Reynaldo had been waiting in the car for Carter, but after what felt like forever, he finally got out to look for him.
As he walked from the garage to the entrance of the Finley Group building, he spotted Carter, all smiles, chatting with
Marina.
Standing next to Marina was a man, his hand resting casually on her waist.

Since they were facing away from him, Reynaldo couldn’t see the man’s face.

Seeing that guy’s hand resting so possessively on Marina’s slim waist, Reynaldo’s eyes flashed with jealousy. He walked over, grinning, and called out.
“Well, Marina, switching boyfriends again?”
He deliberately stressed the word “again,” making it sound like Marina was always changing guys.
“Didn’t you have a different guy with you last time I saw you?”
Reynaldo looked up after speaking, and only then did he realize the guy with Marina was Daron.
His face went pale in an instant, and he just froze on the spot.
“M–Mr. Zamora…” Reynaldo stammered, his voice trembling.
This was the first time Reynaldo had actually met Daron face–to–face.
Under Daron’s sharp stare, Reynaldo dropped his head, not daring to meet his eyes.
Daron gave a cold chuckle, fixing Reynaldo with a steely stare.
“Which one did you see her with last time?” Daron asked, his tone frosty.
Reynaldo had just been running his mouth, trying to stir up drama and embarrass Marina.
But with Daron calling him out, he immediately backed down, ducking his head and muttering.
“I… I must’ve been mistaken,” he stammered. “Nobody, really.”
The more he tried to deny it, the more suspicious he looked.
At that moment, Carter quickly yanked Reynaldo behind him, forcing a smile as he turned to Daron.
“Daron, he’s just messing around with his little sister,” Carter said, trying to play it off.
Marina frowned, cutting Carter off.
“Are you losing your mind? I don’t have a brother, and my relationship with him isn’t something to joke about.”
Marina had been hanging out with Daron pretty much every day lately.
So, Daron wasn’t about to fall for Reynaldo’s nonsense.
Just as Reynaldo was feeling pretty proud of himself for stirring things up, Marina suddenly spoke up in a soft, aggrieved
tone.
“Daron, he’s trying to come between us,” she said, sounding genuinely hurt.
“If I hadn’t been with you every day lately, he might’ve actually succeeded. Daron, he’s just trying to break us up under your skin.”
Reynaldo looked up at Marina, totally stunned.

She had both arms looped around Daron’s, gently swaying them, clearly wanting him to take her side and stand up for her.

Her voice was sweet and a little coquettish, full of that playful, cutesy charm.
Reynaldo looked at Daron, and for a moment, he saw something intense brewing in those deep eyes.
A sense of foreboding immediately rose in his heart.
